mini 14 1:9 twist

I got a new mini 14 tactical with the 1:9 twist, am shooting 55 grain thru it, will it handle a heavier bullet well? I am looking to use it for hogs, I know the 55 will bring down a hog, I kill them with my .17hmr all the time, just want a little larger bullett for my mini. :?:

If you're actually shooting pigs with a 17 HMR, that's one of the most irresponsible things I've heard lately. You run into a good-sized boar with an attitude, and he'll teach you a quick lesson on caliber selection.

To seriously answer your question about a 1:9 twist, it's good up to 69 grain bullets. Some guys have even shot 75s with acceptable results. My Savage 12FV, also a 1:9 does not shoot 75 grain bullets well.... no keyholing, but very poor groups.

I dont know if yall have big hogs where yall live, but I am 57, hardly need a lesson on what caliber I need for a big hog. I run cattle on 3 pastures, average acreage of 600 plus on each, I kill more hogs in one week than most of these people on this site will kill in a year. I have rifles from .17hmr to 30-06 but largest calibers I use are 6.5 Swede, 7-08 and .308. I always carry at least a .44 mag or .45 colt with 300 gr. cast bullets. I use the .17 cause a head shot or even a lung shot will make jello of their organs, dont care if they drop, run a mile or not, my pastures are hell to shred, cut hay on bale hay etc. if I were to shoot pigs with centerfire ammo, I would go broke, have killed big boars with the 17, wish I could post but at my age, computor illiterate.if you get a chance to actually see a big pig try the .17. you can check out www.texasboars.com to see the size hogs we got down here and the .17 will do it, I dont mess with the, they are good buzzard food and coyote bait. my donkeys run the coyotes off. I dont know what hunting is like in Wisconsin, but here in Central Texas I have know what I can do for over 45 years, like I said dont need no lessons. Irresponsible, you pay the bill to farm your land and tellme it is irresponnsible... they are like vermin, rats to me. 39 years ago, qualified marksman, designated rifleman in the military, dont think you can teach me much.

To your original question the 1in 9 will handle heavy bullets no problem.

As to the 17 HMR I know head shots or neck shots will drop large animals where they stand been there done that. I prefer the XTP or a FMJ bullet. For lung shots and not worrying about follow up the explosive V max should work well but have no experience. A lot of people don't realize more deer have been killed by the 22 long rifle than any other caliber and the 17 HMR makes up for a smaller bullet with way more speed. A hog ain't much different than a deer except for maybe the front shoulders. But considering the 17 HMR can penetrate body armor I don't think that would even be a problem.

the .22, a favorite of poachers, but I have killed lots of hogs with shot to the lungs, makes jello of the lungs and hearts if you know what and whereyou are shooting. I got every caliber just about between .17hmr and 30-06 but too many hogs,cant afford to use centerfire I would go broke too many hogs. as soon as the weather gets colder, I will be killing 2 or more hogs a day...just got me a new Ruger #1 Varmint 22.250, cant wait to do some damage with it.

Jimbo, I know yall got lots of pigs in Florida, but here in Texas it is more like an infestation. I always get inquiries about letting people come hunt out here but only let 2 other friends hunt with me and we have hunted together for over 30 years and both are dead shots. by the way any advice on the right bullet for a 1:14 twist for the .22-250, I would like to shoot one bigger than 55 grain but hear pros and cons about it.and like I said check out www.texasboars.com for good pics.

I have a Ruger 77 in 22/250 with the 1in14 twist. I have yet to find a bullet over fifty five grains that will work. If you want a tougher bullet Barnes does make a a 45 grain Triple shock as well as a 50 grain. The 45 shoots very well for me. I have not tried the 50 but the 53 grain would not stabilize.

1/9 will stabilize up to 75gr just fine, 68 - 69gr I have found to be optimal.

I have a problem with possums here, but try to put em out of their misery as fast as possible.

You stated you got 600 acres, listed an arsenal of guns, just mentioned a new tactical mini.
Felix you got the money to shoot a bullet, I am glad you are finally using a big enough one.

I have seen giant hogs and full-grown steers felled instantly by a .22 Short to the brain. In a jurisdiction where it's legal, in the hands of a careful rifleman, the .17HMR would do nicely.
