Does no one understand the meaning of quarantine? We should have left the original bunch in China. Locked our borders down tight and not let anyone in. Yet all of the universities with kids on exchange told them to hurry home.

For true fact right there. All those folks who were in sketchy areas came back to USA and scattered like flushing quail. All those people who were "out of country" would still be "out of country" doing the best they can manage. A cruise ship full of possibly infected people??? That would never have docked if I was making decisions.

Kind of makes you wonder just why this occurred now. Or if it really is occurring. Remember, the WHO head went from "it's only a local issue" to full on pandemic in two days.
One of my best friends is a retired Marine Gunnery Sgt (20 years in the corps) and he was trying to explain to a young woman a few years ago that did not want to understand why we needed a Military in different places around the world... he told her, not sure she got it, that she would never know most of what our military really does to keep U.S. citizens safe in foreign countries....

I agree, I did not think the virus was that bad... still not sure... but two weeks ago I read in the paper that colleges were telling their students to come home and I thought... what in the world are they thinking?
I'm retired military. Our role was to defend America and protect Americans. But it really, really irks me when military men or women's lives are put at risk to rescue some misguided and moronic American who went somewhere they shouldn't have gone and ended up as a hostage of some sort. Any American that stupidly goes into a place like North Korea, or Iran or any number of barely (if at all) civilized sub-Saharan African nations, or any of the radical Islamic controlled places like the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, is on their own as far as I am concerned. If I were the President, and some parents came crying to me saying their sweet child wanted to save the world and went on some type of mission to one of the places I named, I would say sorry folks, I won't put military forces at risk because your child made a stupid decision.

One of the most unintentionally funny shows I have ever seen was the "Locked Up Abroad" series. Typical story line: Pampered American meets guy in bar. Guy offers American money to tape blocks of cocaine to themselves and walk through customs. Everything is arranged. Pampered American gets caught and put in prison for several years. Pampered American is SHOCKED when the embassy says they cn't help them. What! No seal team sent to break me out of prison!!
My favorite episode was about a Brit who was making wine in Kuwait. Major no no in an Islamic Country. He then branched out into selling hash. He was SHOCKED when large men kicked down his door and started searching his house without a warrant. (DUH). He was them locked up in a Kuwaiti prison. About three months in one of the guards tells him "Great news! They had your trial and the court was very merciful. You only got 5 years !"
They always seems so puzzled when they get put in prison for violating the laws of a foreign country.
