A lot depends on where you live. We do a lot of small parcel shipping at work, and it's not uncommon to see a 2-3 lb residential delivery package with about $18.00 in UPS charges. UPS has "extended delivery areas" charges that can really shock you sometimes. Fedex is the same way. Plain old Parcel Post, or even First Class Mail is usually the most economical. Many businesses don't like using the Postal Service because of some of the special restrictions, and they'll be heavily fined if they screw up and accidentally send something potentially hazardous through the mail. Often times, it's not worth the risk.

Hi,

This morning's order from Midway was for $76.97 worth of merchandise, which will weigh roughly six pounds packed up (just a tiny bit more than that brick of .22s mentioned earlier?) Shipping/handling/insurance will be $11.44. Since there's no ammo or haz-mat material involved, it will come "Sure Post" which I think is the UPS version of "Brown truck takes it to the PO then Mailman Dan delivers it." FedEx has a similar program other vendors have used sending stuff to me: either version seems to be more economical than using straight UPS/FedEx/USPS Priority all the way from shipping dock to the door, and runs about the same time as Priority Mail.

I'm not complaining, especially since it costs me half that amount just to send a Priority mail packet w/ less than a pound of paperwork. I learned long ago to comparison shop for the TOTAL price of mdse plus s/h to get it to my door, and order accordingly when possible. Unfortunately, in today's market, an additional factor has to be considered: who HAS it? The answer to that question often overrides the differences in shipping costs... as it did this morning!

I use Midway and Brownells mostly, unless they are out of stock and I need something bad. They both have given me great service.
I started buying from both company's long before the internet was even invented.

But, their shipping is too high for me most of the time,now.
