For awhile now, I have recited things which, in my mind, helps my memory bank. Each morning at bfreakfast, after praying, I recite the Ten Commandments. And at some time during the day Irecite the Books of The Bible and name all of the fifty states.

Anybody else have such mental exercises?

Nope, I just come here and it constantly drags up old memories. I find somewhat amazing how a small statement can trigger complex memories from long ago.

Either that or I make stuff up on the fly and only think it's a memory. Either way my brain is working. Sometimes overtime.

My long term memory is excellent, it's the short term that's always been an issue for me since my teens. How those teen year experiences that I forgot when they happened translate into long term memory today is baffling :-)

I find that playing Scrabble against the computer and working crossword puzzles helps with memory. Recalling words and connections to words. I like the recitation exercise, too. I try to quote speeches from Henry V, Cyrano de Bergerac, and others.

"Cyrano de Bergerac"

Now that's a name I have not heard mentioned in more than a few years! Sometime in high school '64-68) I read the play (or part of it ) it an English class.

If dementia strikes any of us it’s likely the OLD memories will still be with us.
I picked up a hobby that is totally different than anything I’ve done in my life. I take weekly lessons, I practice it daily, it’s opened up a new social circle, requires study and searching You Tube videos for help.
Healthcare pro’s I know say THAT is most likely to keep the brain active and alert and maybe stave off problems.

One thing to know is that if you cannot remember something that you know that you used to know, whether its the name of your 2nd grade teacher, or who starred in your favorite movie, etc. but it later comes back to you, it is only normal aging and not Alzheimer's or another dementia disorder. If you forget something and it is gone forever, then it might well be early signs of dementia.

I use a little mental tool sometimes to remember something I am sure I still know. Just the other day I was trying to remember the first name of a man I knew when in the Army, a Brigadier General who was a genuinely nice guy (I was a Lieutenant Colonel at the time) who dropped dead while on a morning run. At first I could not recall his name despite my knowing him fairly well. I then start to recite the alphabet in my head, thinking of each letter in turn as the first letter of the name I am trying to remember. In this case I didn't have to go far, saying "A", then "B" and then the name Billy came into my mind (which was his actual name, not William).
