Where were you on May 8, 1945? I was a young lad, listening to the radio when news bulletins kept comin in fast and furious. Adolph Hitler was dead. The Germans had surrendered. The War in Europe was over.

Women came out of their houses to share any news. My Mother wept, as did many more women, at the thought that their husbands or sons were safe and would not have to go. A couple of women stood silently, weeping gently, their husband or son had already paid the ultimate price.

We stayed glued to the radio. My brother was safe and would not come home for awhile as he was on occupation duty.

Probably in 2nd grade in school. That was a Tuesday. I do remember horns blowing. At that time where I lived was country so not much else was gonna happen till the local watering holes got filled.

5+ years before I was born. But shortly thereafter they told my dad he could go in the Army. He was a tool maker at Saginaw Steering Gear designing and making the tooling for BAR & M1 Carbine production. When the war in Europe was over they let him enlist. Came out of basic a Sargant and got shipped to Alaska - to run a machine shop. My mom went along but they sent the wives up the Alcan highway so as not to expose them to possible sub attacks if they went by ship.

half of me was in Denmark S.C. and the other in Trenton S.C., both still in high school .

Actually that is not actually correct but I'll pass on the biology lesson.

How the world got into the mess it was in back then is just hard to figure out.

I came from a huge family with something like eight or nine uncles (counting aunts husbands) that served.
I am eighty and do recall seeing them what seemed all within a few weeks for the first time. My dad took me fishing
behind our store. He caught a bass and said he was going to throw it back in as the season for them started next week. I protested, scooped the bass up and took for home. I was crawling up the embankment right by our store and a stranger was waiting for me. He said hey kid that fish is illegal. I am a game warden and I am gonna take you to jail! Dad was a few feet behind me, I pointed to him and said he made me carry it! They howled with laughter! I had just met another uncle! Things were wild with partying etc for the next year or so.

I was 3years and 2 months old at the time and we were living outside of Ellington AAFB Texas. My Dad had returned from Italy 15th AAF where he had flown 50 missions as a Ball Turret Gunner in B-17s. He was awaiting orders to be discharged so we all could move back to Ohio. Yes I do remember some things but not VE Day.

Dad was the radio man for the Military Governor's group of the 9th Armored Division in the spring of 1945. He was at the Remagen Bridge and saw a bunch of action. They ran into Nazi youth shooting 88mm cannons with old SS guys teaching them how. Watched aerial dogfights over the Rhine River

I was in Columbia, Missouri filling my diaper while my dad was in Paris, France.
Also, my wife was being born in Culver City, California.
Pretty busy day for the family.
