Hi first time poster here... been lurking for some time tho...

I recently picked up a Volquartsen Mark II trigger upgrade and hammer bushing for my Mark III (remove the mag disconnect) … I have installed it, but in testing when I pull the trigger with the safety on, then switch the safety to fire sometimes the gun fires w/out me pulling the trigger (1 out of 10). I have taken it down several times and put it back together but I still end up with the same result. Any suggestions? The only thing (newbie here) that I can see that could make a difference could be a new seer spring? Anyway I’m all ears for suggestions how to fix this.

Thanks

Ron

Ron,
Did you replace the sear spring with the one that came in the kit? I did an upgrade yesterday to a MK III 22/45 and the sear package had a note to reuse the factory spring. Also, did you adjust the trigger over travel screw? If you did, you might want to back it out slightly and then test again.

Ken,

I reused the factory spring and tried all kinds of settings on the set screws but I can make it happen at any setting. I compared my spring to a picture online and it was not exactly the same shape so I ordered a new one figuring it may be weak. Would that be a symptom of a weak or tweaked spring?

Thanks for responding.

Well Ron,
Standby, I checked my gun and guess what... It's doing the same thing!! I'm running a number of threads to attempt to find a solution!!

I'm no gunsmith, but the first thing I would do is put EVERYTHING back to factory configuration and try the gun. If it works correctly every time in factory configuration I would suspect the "upgrade" parts.

Quick update... Sent an email to Volquartsen describing the issue: Upgraded my MK III 22/45 with Volquartsen accurizing kit and MK II hammer bushing. When checking safety found the following: Cock gun, set safety, pull trigger with safety on, release safety and the hammer falls without touching the trigger! Failure occurs regardless of pre-travel/over-travel adjustments. While waiting to hear back from Volquartsen, I switched hammers (reinstalled stock hammer). In a nutshell the problem is gone!! So... was it a bad VQ hammer? Was it a stacked tolerance issue between the new VQ sear and hammer? Waiting to hear back from Volquartsen on their thoughts. In the mean time, if you have upgraded your Ruger please perform this check!!

Mark 2 parts in a mark 3 sounds like a problem. I bet I know what volquatsen will say. Wonder how common this failure is and how often it goes unnoticed. I've done a mark 2 and 3 with no problems using correct kits. I hate to think of some kid at the range next to me whos made these mods and has a not noticed this problem.

Putting a MkII hammer and bushing in a MkIII is not a problem. I have done it.

Installing a MK II "hammer bushing" in a MK III allows you to delete the clip safety - it fills the lateral gap and improves the trigger pull. This is a common mod! For clarity, the hammer I reinstalled is the original MK III stock hammer. The issue, I believe, is between the new sear and hammer. And I agree with you, if you've upgraded your gun, PLEASE CHECK IT FOR THIS FAILURE MECHANISM!

Sorry, the issue I talked about and now removed, is with 10/22 aftermarket hammers, not MK's. Had me a senior moment.

Volquartsen stepped up to the plate and are replacing the hammer and sear on both of our guns!

After Volquartsen examined the hammer that I returned to them, they sent a new target hammer as a replacement. Installed the new hammer and the gun is shooting flawlessly! Thanks VQ!!
