mark 2 disassembly problem

my 1984 m2 22 has not been cycling lately. it wasn't shot hardly at all in at least 25 years but my boys put about 1000 rounds through it in the last few months so it probably needs a good cleaning. anyway when i pull the lever down on the grip to drop the bolt retainer out, it never goes all the way down. i have pushed hard but don't want to force it. i watched several youtube videos and they all show the lever being almost horizontal and mine is several degrees north of that. does anyone have any idea what i need to do to break this gun down?

no, i cocked it and dry fired it and then tried to disassemble it. i tried it with the trigger pulled, cocked, uncocked, it just seems stuck. the youtube videos show it coming right out so i don't know if mine is seized up in there or what. it has never been apart. i bought it in 1984 and it sat basically unused for 20 years with maybe 50 rounds shot. probably never cleaned either.

make sure the gun is empty, pull the bolt back, spray the heck out of the 'insides' with brake cleaner or such, then blow it out, spray it down (inside) with any sort of lubricant, yes even WD-40 ( that scares LOTS of folks :roll:
then try a shim ( feeler gauge) on both sides of the mainspring housing, make sure it is clear on either side, maybe one of the rivets moved over ,out of place and is hanging up the removal......if you get a "blockage" then using a plastic or leather mallet, tap on the OPPOSITE side of the frame in the back to try and 'shift' the pin back enough to clear...other wise you may have to use the shim itself to slip OVER the pin ( rivet) and get it back enough to clear......
the cleaner and the oil should loosen up and clean out enough 'gunk' sludge, dried oil , whatever, to loosen up the housing to swing down, yes, you may still have to "tap" on the top of the locking pin ( behind the rear sight) to drive the housing DOWN...but the pivot has to be swung out of the way to clear.......tough to "see" whats going on through a 'blank' screen many,many miles away..............
