I gave my SR1911 a new Daddy today. It isn't even gone yet and I sort of miss it already. Time will tell if this was a huge mistake. Arthritis and getting old just suck! Thanks for all the advise and help in making this decision guys. If it turns out to be wrong, I can always get another one right?

I bought a new model 94 Winchester back in the early 70's, and then traded it or something. I had always missed that rifle, so I started on a search for another one a while back. Finally found one I wanted and brought it home. Didn't take long to realize that loading it hurt my hands so bad that I couldn't use it. Getting old ain't for sissies!

I hear ya...at 67, I'm having more difficulty loading magazines, especially the last two or three in a 12+ round Glock or Sig.

When I retired, my kids bought me a guitar...hadn't played since college, but soon found that after I developed the necessary calluses for steel strings, both hands and fingers improved dramatically in dexterity and strength...give it a try, as my Doc says, "use it or lose it". Best Regards, Rod

NOPE, THAT IS ALL you are alloted Old Timer !! As my Grandaddy use to say to me " you are just SOL, Sonnyboy". He never told me what that meant but I knew it was not good.....
And so it goes...

Grandad always said that...I guess we all find out the hard way!

Loading magazines is easy, just get an UPLULA universal magazine loader. Handles single or double stack, .380 through .45acp. Best money I have ever spent. I have strong hands with no issues, and I still use the UPLULA. Ed

At age 92 my grandmother stated "If I had known getting old was going to be like this, I never would have done it!" Of course she didn't shoot so she did a lot of sitting around. Remember you will rust out before wearing out. Keep shooting something. It keeps you moving and your mind active.

My Mum, who is now dead told me getting old was not nice, and if I lived long enough I would find out. Starting to find out.

My mother told me in no uncertain terms I was "not going to make it to 10 years old"

So since my tenth birthday, I have treated every day like it is a gift. I beat the odds! Ed

Gittin old sucks for sure. I got a Uplula mag loader and it works on any type magazine you want to load. I can get a full magazine in my Glocks and Para's. For close up work I still have my grand pappy's Greener double hammer. Wth!

Philbee: You should consider getting a 1911 in 9mm. They are much easier to function than in 45 acp. The recoil springs are lighter and easier to cycle and there is less recoil.

There are some pretty good 1911/22's out and you could always get a .22 upper for the Ruger 1911. There are several shooters at the club where I shoot that are in your 80's. They keep telling me to just keep shooting it doesn't matter what you shoot just keel getting out and pulling the trigget

Pat Rogers had an excellent article a few months ago in SWAT magazine entitled," Putting down the man gun". He wrote about leaving the .45 for 9mm because of the same problems troubling the OP, and many others here, including ME. I've got a lot of 9's, but am gonna keep enjoying the more than a few 45's I have, till these old hands just MAKE me stop.

I'm 66 and still work two jobs using my hands a lot... shoot my 1911's & BHP no problems but after 50 or 60rds. through my 5 1/2 " SBH with full house loads my hands start to bother me some ...good luck

philbee, i urge you to stick with it. i'm still a kid (55), but i have really bad osteo arthritis (so bad my doc thought i might have rheumatoid), so i feel your pain. i'm extremely active, and with things hurting so bad, it is real tempting to slow down, but as long as i keep pushing through, i can at least do what i want still (for now). ask your doc for advice.
