Just found a nice RSI 7mm-08, with the red butt pad and tang safety. I have never seen one and wanted one since I saw a picture in GD some 30 years ago. Serial # 772-29xxxxx, any thoughts on #s produced, and at $500 was it a good buy? It has only minor stock dings and no blue wear. Couldn't let it go.

Yeah...you got a great buy! I've always heard there were only about 150 made in all, 100 or so as a trial run with the initial RSI offerings in about 1982/1983 (serial range 77-16956 and 77-53497 to 77-55394) and another 50 for one of Ruger's distributors in 1989 (serial range 772-29922 to 772-39766).
You have the rarest known tang safety RSI caliber.
If your sn falls outside of the sn range I listed in the 772- prefix, please PM your sn to me so I can update the reference. Thanks!!

WOW

American??? $500 bucks, I think I paid just a tad....over twice that! Although NIB, $500.00 is a true find for that gun.

Shot the new/old M77 RSI 7mm-08 today. Using Hornady Super Performance 139gr SSTs, lost some 80FPS. Average for 10 shots 2840Fps, low 2815 to 2848 high. Slightly low at 25 yards to 2 1/2" high at 100 yards, with standard bench hold, 1" group(Two shots) changed hold after first two(1"also). Scope Leupold 1x4 Turkey scope with HVD, really heavy crosshairs. Iron sights 5" left but on at 100. Recoil as could be expected, about like a 308. Pleased so far, especially the rarity of the caliber and potential with initial range session. Wanted one of these since I saw Bill Ruger's prototype in the GD of 1984 or so.
