Did the 77R's ever come with a black plastic but plate in lieu of the red pad or even a black pad? I saw one for sale like that and asked the seller, but they were clueless to the matter.

prefix 700....701s went to rubber...
The first Model 77/22R came with just a black plastic butt plate.
I got a reply from the seller that solved the mystery just forgot to post here. The rifle in question has a Herter's marked plastic plate on the stock. Presumably the original red pad was worse for wear and that was someone's solution.

The only bolt rifles that Ruger ever made with the black plastic "Sporter" style buttplate was the 77/22. They changed to the rubber buttpad around the 700-6xxxx range.
Ruger's 10/22 deluxe sporter also had a Sporter style buttplate to begin with, changed to the black rubber pad in the 128- prefix.
