Looking Way Back

I had a 1970 'Cuda with a 383 magnum & a Muncie 4 speed. One of my good pals had a Red SS 454. Man, did we have some fun! That 454 would stomp all over my Cuda. It's the only car I ever rode that would break the rear tires loose with an 80 mph powershift into 4th.

Yeah... Glad I got to live through those days.

2 headlights, I believe it's a '71. I saw a beautiful '69 or '70 pass me going in the other direction last weekend. I love to see them on the road!

Yep, That is a 71 SS. I had a 72 SS with a working cowl hood. Yes it had a small block 350 but it WOULD melt the tires right now!! I miss that car even today. When I parked it somewhere the cowl flapper would raise up and stay there. That was THE coolest feature of that car. My dad would borrow it on Sundays to go get his hair cut. Yeah, right. He was out drag racing it I think. :D BTW- mine was cortez silver with a black vinyl top.

I work with a guy who lives in south Georgia, he's got a sweet '70. Might have been him!

My 1st car was a '64-1/2 Mustang, had a 302 and screwed up tranny when I bought it in '78. Went in the service in '79, and it sat for awhile. Decided to put a few $$$ in the motor, and have it painted while I was in NC, car was in PA. That puppy ended up purty quick!
After I got out of the military, I'd take south central PA's newest 4 lane, Hwy 222 home from work once in awhile for about 5 miles. Smooth, flat, and fairly empty on the northern end, that road saw the 55 mph speed limit shattered, doubled, and then some on more than 1 occasion!   Never got tripled on my account, but wasn't far off!

A mechanic from the local diesel shop had a '68-'69 SS El Camino, with a 396, iirc. Just so happened that we got off at about the same time fairly often, and would hit the hwy 1 in front of the other a couple of times a week. I could take him out of the hole, but about 1-1/2 miles down the road he's blow past me, providing there wan't any traffic, and township cop was at the donut shop.....

Good times! And tires were CHEAP back then.

Your Cuda didn't have a Muncie box. Those were made by GM. You had a New Process (Chrysler) A-833 4 speed. Chrysler tried the Borg-Warner T-10 and it wasn't strong enough.
Nice Chevelle but with all the repro parts these days it could be a clone. It ticks me off when people try to pass off clones as the real thing.

We used to race on the road between Sierra Vista and Tombstome in '71. One guy had a '70 SS 396 4spd Chevelle;it was one of the quicker cars. Another had a Boss 302 4spd Mustang, also one of the better runners.

I haven't heard of Muncie transmissions in Chrysler products. My '71 Dodge had a 4 spd that was company built.http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/four-speed-manual.html

Oops,,, you are right. It is a 1971. I got a little excited as my brother bought the 1970 SS, 396 with the cowl induction. When he shipped to Germany, then Vietnam,,, he put the car in our mom's name. It was the first true "hot rod" I ever got to drive.

I saw a guy in a new hemi Mopar (can't recall which model except not a E body) at Ft Lewis when I was processing to go o/s in Feb '70. He probably had just returned from a tour.

Ed, if that photograph inspires my Dad to get the special fuel and start driving that ancient Pontiac he has again I promise I will think of a way to thank you. My first idea is sand fleas and ticks. :(

Hi,

Selena, methinks you've just about overstayed your welcome here...

I wear a Hartz Tick & Flea Collar, haven't had a tick or flea in 6 months.

Hi,

My apologies, Pamela: I didn't intend to stand in your way for that role. My crystal ball suggests your heroine may leave you feeling it's yours soon enough--guess we'll just have to see!
