Live fire cannon shoot TN

Through a friend of mine I learned of a live fire artillery shoot in Pelham TN March 3-4. I have already booked my room. I have seen a few reenactments but never a live fire. I think the 4th they will be firing competition at 1000 yards.
Mostly civil war stuff but dang, live fire!
Any of ya'll round that area.... sounds like good times.

I have seen them fire a cannon at Fort Fredrick at Big Pool in Maryland.
MUCH more fun to watch Hawk Missiles take off and the Nike-Hercules was even more spectacular. Yeah, Somewhere I got photos of BOTH happening but not handy to posting.

Hi back a number of years ago my wife a I were visiting friends in Tenn and were out going for a ride seeing the country and we saw a sign for a cannon fire show at Stones River battle ground so we went in it was amazing they fired 6 or 8 original cannons first one at a time then every other 2 at a time then all at once talk about noise and smoke absolutely awesome :D :D

I've seen modern artillery fired while in the air (from my Huey) and while on the ground. I've seen Civil War cannon fired with blanks,,, and even had a friends ashes fired over a gun range once. But a live fire with old cannon has escaped me.

I booked a room in Monteagle for Friday and Saturday. This will be a first live fire era/black powder shoot for me.
My pal builds civil war cannons for a living.
I'm told that after 3-4 pm we will be allowed to go down range to look for shot balls, of course the range will be closed for those that ask. As well we can keep what we find!
Unless something dramatic happens I will be in the area for this event. Ifin any ya'll are close by and want to meet send me a pm.
If none of ya'll show up I'll still have a great time and take lots of pictures.

First day set up was hampered by past rain. Only long range 800+ yards will be shot. Beautiful place and great folks. Several rounds were fired today for fun. Weekend pass is $15. There are a dozen or more cannons and several mortars that will be fired. I look forward to Saturday.
Overhearing conversations I gather that most of the guys do reenactments and really look forward to live fire.

Only modern gun there is a French 75mm.....it fired today, got a picture of me holding a live round fixing to be passed to loader.
GPS will guide you there.
Enough artillery, shot and powder to start a small war, gonna be a real blast.

I'd really like to have a 20-37mm rifled barrel "cannon" (it would be more like a single shot rifle on a pedestal). I've got 1200-1500 yards right out of my front yard to shoot it. Problem is, the legalities and/or paper work of the mini-artillery piece are more than I want to mess with.

Sounds like fun. What are they using for projectiles? I was at a cannon shoot in Southern Vt. quite a few years ago and it appeared like they were shooting dog food cans filled with cement. They were shooting at plywood targets somewhere around 150 yards away.

I've seen videos of 37mm's shooting a solid lead projo at stacked concrete blocks. DEVASTATING would be an appropriate term.

gramps called today and said he might be stopping by Sunday.
Projectiles are solid or canister (grape shot), no explosive rounds are allowed.
They are made of different metal alloys.
Watched a crew hit a 4x8 target 5 times today around 650 yards, took em more than 5 but dang, an old guy that looked like he was 100 was doing all the sighting! They had an about 1 foot red dot center of target, one bullseye!!!!!!
We have one more day and it's back to the grind.

Yep, I had lunch with a couple of ladies, but by the time I left and would have got to Pelham, the shooting would be over. I opted to go early Sunday AM! Looking forward to visiting with Volshooter, and having a blast too.

The North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) live fires all of the firearms and cannon from the War of Northern Aggression. Their home range is just a few miles outside of Winchester, Virginia. They have two National skirmishes every year, in May and October. Visitors are welcome. No parking or entry fee.

Meet up with gramps today at the shoot. Dadgum real nice feller and I had a real good time. Caint say enough bout gramps, very educated, friendly, smart as a whip and fun to be around. That feller fit in with the guys better than anyone I've ever seen! If any of youns ever get the chance to meet him you need to put that on your bucket list. Me, I had to try and remember how educated folk talk so I didn't sound so hillbilly/ignorant round him.
Between us we got plenty of pictures as well a short video of gramps lighting a mountain rifle off. However I don't know if either one of us know how to post pictures. There's a fairly nice pic or two of gramps and I leaning on a cannon my buddy built and one of us shaking hands. If they ever get posted I'm feller on the left.
I'm hoping someone will help with basic info on posting pictures/videos.


gramps, bud, I enjoyed our time together, would do it again in a heart beat. Love ya man, mean it.

Volshooter, I had a blast!!! I really want to thank you for posting about this competition. I love the smell of gunpowder, and the good vibrations. :). Guys if you ever get the chance to say howdy to Volshooter do it! We had fun yacking like a couple of Magpies. Don’t let him kid you, he may be from Hillbilly Heaven, but he has bunches of common sense! The folk there are passionate about their sport! It costs $40-$90 per shot depending on the caliber. They shot between 50-100 shots each during the weekend. Whooee! It was fun! Not good with pictures, photobucket is worthless now. I will need to set up an account somewhere.

Sounds like a good time was had by all, the wife and I talked about driving down but I just wasn’t feeling well enough sorry we missed it. As for Gramps he is a really nice guy but let’s let it go at that otherwise he will get a big head and be out of control. Volshooter you Need to try and go to the east coast gathering next year, another great time.

Well there must be TWO people on this form that go by GRAMPS.
I met and shot with one of them at our Ruger Fest a few years back. It SURE wasn't the same one in the above post. The one I know has a
bad habit of running over both LARGE and small Hogs in the dark of the night.
