I recently watched a video of a penetration and expansion test of .327 85 gr JHP ammo and I was impressed. So I thought I'd check some handloads vs. factory ammo. The Lyman 50th edition reloading manual for 85 gr jacketed bullets has load data for Unique powder of 5.8 - 6.5 grains. With my chronograph at 12 yards, American Eagle factory 85 gr JSPs averaged 1230 fps. A very comfortable load with Hogue grips on my LCR. Then I shot Hornady 85 gr XTP JHPs over 6.2 gr of Unique with CCI 500 primers. Those Chronographed an average of 1300 fps. I was looking for a load that was close to factory, as factory ammo is hard to find and expensive, but the Hornady bullets are available. I am really pleased with my Ruger LCR, one of 4 Ruger .327s so far. I did not test for accuracy, only velocity. I have longer barreled revolvers for that.
