I sat in one of our less disturbed stands last evening just to see what was moving. I was sort of expecting activity because the morning's fog had put deer to bed early-- but nothing close to what I saw. I had to do my evening chores before going out and got to the stand just in the nick of time. Hadn't been there more than 15 minutes when the first doe showed herself and literally had deer in sight until too dark to see. They were coming off a bedding area of ungrazed pasture and brush headed for the cut soybean field that's seeded to cover crop cereal rye.
There's a gate in the division fence directly in front of the blind and as best I could keep track twenty deer walked through the gate. Another 5-6 hopped the fence or went out of sight behind the blind. At one point, I could see 4 bucks but unfortunately, the only one that I might have considered shooting skirted around some brush and entered the open field too far out for my handgun. Closest deer was a bambi that walked between the blind and fence 16' away.
Grand daughter still has a doe tag or two so maybe she can hunt that spot with me next week.
