larger bolt knob on m77 possible?

I love my ruger. But I would like a little larger knob on my bolt handle. Is it possible to change out the handle (or knob) on my ruger? Don’t want anything gaudy or blingy. Just want a little larger bolt knob than what is on the rifle currently.

Kinda like the savage handles on their varmint rifles.

Have a gunsmith replace the knob. cut and reweld a new one on the handle then a reblue.

THere is 1/2" or very close to that betwen the knob and the side of the reciever. So you could add nearly that in the radious and it would still fit. That however wouldn't leave much clearance between the knob and the stock to get your hand/fingers in to cycle the action.

Might take a bit of straightening of the bolt handle along with a bigger bolt knob to get what you want and still leave the rifle where it can easily be cycled.

All a matter of personal preference.

A competent smith should be able to accomplish the bend in a bolt block and Brownells has "Knobs"

Just remember when doing things, the Ruger bolts are castings.

You can cut or have the knob portion cut off, drill and tap the stub. Thread in a long set screw, and use any of the aftermarket target or tactical knobs. Be certain the set screw matches the thread of the knobs you'll be using.

To lengthen the bolt, you can grind the knob into a circular cross section same as the bolt prior to the knob. Then do the above.

Use Red Loctite (271) to attach the set screw (stud) to the bolt, and Blue Loctite (242) to attache the knob to the bolt/set screw.

Don't forget about verifying scope clearance if you do this kind modification.

A few layers of duct tape ??? Just kidding, of course - duct tape will fix most anything, but I don't think this is one of them.

I have a tang-safety M77 in .30-06 and a Savage 12FV in .223. The Savage has a HUGE knob on the bolt, and the Ruger doesn't. When shooting, I can't tell any difference.

All kidding aside, you might be onto something here.

One could get some epoxy putty (such as that Mighty Putty stuff seen on TV--it is pretty darn hard and durable) and cover the existing knob and form and work it to whatever size and shape are desired. If you ever wanted to remove it, it wouldn't be THAT hard to take off.

Seriously. This would work. Might not look too great, but I didn't get the impression from the OP that "looks" were a high priority with this project.

Wwb, I can tell a difference in the two knobs you speak of. I don't consider the savage knob to be huge. I've seen some that are gaudy. That's not my thoughts here. But a little larger knob would help, especially in winter with gloves on. Snake45, I bet you and bob elliot don't like big loops on lever guns either? Tisk tisk
