My son just found one a few months ago. I don't think he's shot it yet. But I plan to "correct" this when I get to his house.
 
Oh man.....an all time favorite of mine! The ones I have shoot like a lazer. That long sight radius and special narrow blade rear just wring the accuracy out of an already accurate platform. The pure awesome looks of this model are an added bonus! Your son will be served well with his choice.

dave.inkc.... released in 1983 and incorporating details we put in Blackhawk .357 Maximum, the KS411N represents the first wave of stainless Super Blackhawks. Improvements over the S410N (1979) and which reflect the 10-1/2-inch Maximum include bull (un-tapered) barrel, Maximum ejector assembly to completely clear cases on extraction, and a screw-attached target blade front sight.

In its inaugural IHMSA silhouette match, the KS411N fired all four categories of competition----Revolver, Production, Unlimited, and Standing----Setting the 140x160 Revolver Record in the process. It soon took on the appellation “Silver Hornpipe,” on the firing lines of the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association.

In free recoil the KS411N rises less than its predecessor S410N. The blue “Silhouette Super” S410N has a tapered 10-1/2-inch barrel with silver soldered ramp front sight, and uses the standard ejector with anodized aluminum housing. The ejector housing screw fasten to a nut countersunk and soldered to the barrel. Bull barrels allowed a deeper hole, threading the housing screw directly to the barrel.

A good Silver Hornpipe loaded with top ammunition----emphatically to include the Sierra 240 JHC, 220 FPJ, and 250 FPJ, along with Federal’s own 240 JHP (looks like a Sierra 240 JHC but is made by Federal Cartridge), is capable of printing 5x5 under 6-inches @ 200 meters (219 yards).

A "Silver Hornpipe” made today comes from Newport, New Hampshire with a Ruger hammer forged barrel and catalog number 0806. In blue it is the 0807. All Ruger single actions were made in Southport, Connecticut until production resumed in Newport in 1992. (The prefix “K” is dropped on blue version (S411N) of the KS411N. Ruger used the “K” prefix to designate stainless steel.)

The KS411N roared onto the firing line in 1983. Today it is a sleeper, beautiful revolver of great capability.

One of my IHMSA mentors was cleaning out and found it in the back of the safe. He bought it when he found out his FA on order would not make it for the internationals in Oakridge, forget the year.
He received his FA later that year and proceeded to try and wring it out. It was stubborn and would not cooperate. The Ruger shot more consistent than the FA. He went to a 357 magnum and never looked back. The Ruger was kept as a spare all these years. It had less than 500 rounds through it before I purchased it. I picked up the FA as well, just to much history for me to let it get away. Items from good friends are as valuable as heirlooms.

Thank you David Bradshaw! I read everything you post here. And you post cool pictures too. I'm looking forward to shooting this Super. I have a March 1981 Guns Ammo where there is an article which calls "Long Tom". Shows a blue model with 3-4 inch group 220 yrds. I was looking fora 4 5/8 Super BH when I found this for starting bid of 375.00. I bought it for little more, still the cheapest SBH on GB last night. No box, but it's going to be spending time in my leathered fist!
 
Jeff and toroflow.... first stainless Super I shot was the prototype for the KS410N----tapered 10-1/2” with short stainless ejector assembly and soldered base, ramp front sight. Bill, Jr., shows up with a pair of stainless Supers, a 7-1/2 and a 10-1/2. Shorter than normal cylinders on both. We were at work on the .357 Maximum, with the Rugers intent on coming right behind with the Super in stainless.

I stapled a couple rectangles of cardboard upon which I’d painted with white house paint the IHMSA pig. 100 yards. Got down in Creedmoor with Federal 44A 240 JHP; loaded up. Took a few sighters. Bill, Jr., sat behind in the grass with a spotting scope. Stitched 5x5 into 2.7-inches. Shot #4 was the leaker. 4x4=0.7-inch, a horizontal hole. From there I pressed for the gun to hit the stands with bull barrel, target sight and long ejector ala .357 Maximum. In fact, I was shocked that a KS410N was released at all.

Ruger took one of my Silhouette Supers (S410N), the one drilled & tapped for a Leopold base, pulled the barrel and installed a bull 10-1/2 with Maximum ejector and target sight, which blu Super became the actual prototype for the stainless KS411N.

David, in other posts you mention various methods that Ruger has used over the years to cut barrels. Which method, in your opinion, is "the best": button-rifled, hammer forged, or?? (I forget what other method you stated). Thank you.

Ruger bought barrels for years from the George Wilson Company in Connecticut. In single actions, .22 rifling was swaged with a carbide button. The eight-groove .357 barrel was button rifled. The six-groove .44 was cut with a broach----a long rod, the shaft of which is festooned with teeth taking progressively deeper bites. I suspect that the Blackhawk .30 Carbine was buttoned, and suspect that .41 Mag and .45 Colt barrels were broached.

Quality of the gun-drilled hole and reaming is more important than whether the barrel is buttoned or broached. Redhawk barrels began as drop forgings, which were then machined, drilled and broached. Ruger installed hammer forging machine in Newport to manufacture rifle and handgun barrels in house. A barrel to be hammer forged begins as a short, thick piece of round stock, which is drilled & reamed prior to mounting in the forging machine. Hydraulic hammers pound the tube while a carbide button forms the rifling and stops the hole from collapsing. The short, fat smoothbore tube is hammered into a long, thinner, rifled tube.

Each method must start with a pristine hole to assure uniform bore and groove. Thus, accuracy can vary between examples. Great accuracy intrinsic to a proper barrel is murdered by a sloppy or excessive forcing cone. Other acts of manufacturing which harm accuracy include over-tightening barrel to frame or applying a rollmark with excessive pressure or, notably, too big a rollmark.

That's the first hunting revolver I ever bought. Standard tapered Bbl. in Blue finish.
At the time, the best loads I found were upper end loads of BLUE DOT Powder & a 200 Gr.
Hollow point, for whitetail deer. Outstanding power & accuracy back then.(1970's)
I later sold that particular revolver & bought a S&W 657, 8⅜" .41 Mag. which is still my favorite
handgun to this day. But, . . . . . . I missed the 10½" Super so much, I finally bought a new
Stainless 10½" a few years later. It's still a hoot to shoot, although I now use WW 296 exclusively
in all my magnum revolver loads, & I still use a 200 Gr. H.P. in the .44 for some of deer season.
Nothing has walked away from the Super or the S&W.
I've since bought a Stainless 7½", & a 5½" Super, & now only need the 4⅝" to make it a nice set,
but for now, I'm working on another .41 Mag. Blackhawk project. You just gotta love anything above .40 Cal.
