I couldn't stand it no more. Finnally cut down my Super redhawk. I enjoy working on this project. I can have a dovetail cut for 60.00 but I think I am going to try a bolt on sight for it. Sure would like to do all the work myself. I am going to take the barrel all the way down like an original Alaskan. Lot of fun but I sure had doubts

I saw the very same SRH a few weeks ago on a table of used gear & thought of doing the same thing..
Your gonna end up with a very small front sight like the SP101s use.. I don't know of any bolt on style that could work but would love to see what you end up with..
You should also look into one of the Factory Compact Grips that takes the SP101 inserts, won't be as cushy as the Hogues but would make a much better concealed carry style grip IMO..

Mark Morganti @ Gemini Customs sells a Small Wonder Site for the GP100 Fixed & SP101s that might work for this "Custom Alaskan"..
Here's the links..

I tried the Eagle grips on a Alaskan, the 45 colt was ok but the 454 was to brutal for the smaller grips, think I will just keep the Hogues on it, this is primarily a House defense gun anyway. Sure like the gray look to it.

very nice!
i'm not sure i know what a bolt on sight is, can you explain?
thanks

btw, i think a simple stainless bead sight would be easy to drill and tap and be relatively snag free.

Well I'm glad you took the plunge, it's agreat looking custom. Remember when you shorten a barrel you'll need a front sight with overall height from the bore centerline a lttle higher than the original.

Personally I like to make my customs look like they could have come from the factory. Therefor I would cut off the original front ramp sight, remove material from the bottom of the factory ramp but leave enough so it's higher than originally. Screw it to the top of the frame with a flush headed, countersunk screw hidden in the dovetail under the front blade. If after you test fire the gun, it's too high you can shave off the bottom of the ramp by just unscrewing it and replace it. When you get the height right, put a drop of locktite on the screw.

Your correct about that Hondo44..

I would have opted to get a .0100" slot cut & use the original type Alaskan/GP100/SP101 type sight, but this would also require the pin hole be drilled threw the barrel too..
That Gold bead Geminin Customs Sight is very nice as well as his fiber optic ones..
Who knows without looking you may be able to find a sight that is short enough that can be mounted by a threaded screw hole or two??
With a mill you could recreate the notch & spring hole & use a factory replaceable SRH sight & have a couple different sights for different loads..
Lots of possibilities..
Good Luck in your quest, also Hamilton Bowen sells several sights that He uses on his custom work & may have something just like what your looking for..

I look forward to seeing how it turns out..

Also the Idea of a Shotgun bead is also interesting too??

I think Hamilton Bowens DX sight will work for you just fine..
You'll also have to find the sight you want to fit into it too..
Weigand also makes a similar sight too..

There's a Point of Impact Adjustment Formula on this page that may come in handy as well..
SDM makes some super nice inserts for the DX sight systems that alot of the S&W shooters use, Look Here for them..

Hammerdown77 has a good point! On another note, as a house defense gun, that muzzle "blast/flash" would be very "distracting", maybe to a point where one might not get off a needed "second" shot. Just a "point" to ponder......................Dick

Thanks Gentlemen, I didn't want to silver solder the abarrel, wanted to keep the gray finish, I think it looks good that color, If my sight don't work out I might get the 3/8 dovetail cut into it or have it cut like an original Alaskan. I am just trying to do the whole project myself instead of paying somebody else to do it. Kinda like the self esteem knowing I could do the whole project in my own garage. Thanks for all the input, will show picture when its all done.

Why not just contact Ruger and get a sight and pin for the Alaskan?

I must admit the grey finish is nicer to me.

It would be alot easier to just drill & tap one hole to mount the DX style were the original would require you to machine the slot for the sight & then drill the cross pin hole too..
It all depends on what you want & how much you want to spend..

Really like the looks of the Matte Target Grey Alaskan..
Congrats!!

I think you could have just unscrewed the barrel and fired it through the hole in the frame!

You made me laugh out loud. I've heard of gamblers and others doing that with old cap and ball long barreled guns.

Come to think about it, it'd be awfully hard to remove the barrel now.

Finnally installed front sight on cut down redhawk, A marble rifle sight base with Marlin 30-30 gold sight, a little elevation tweeking on rear sight and it shot pretty good. All in all pretty pleased with project, fun to do it all yourself.

Well I'll be the 1st to say well done! As a general rule I don't like rifle sights on a handgun but what you've done is very attractive, looks right and you did it all yourself! Bravo!

Cut your own! here is a link on how.

Not valid I see you did what was the easiest and looks very very good.

My son has a 480 he is going to cut. I have a alaskan 454 and am begging him to cut it to the alaskan size he wants to cut it to 4". It's his gun and he can do what he wants but in my opinion the 480 alaskan would be a great gun. and would look better than a 4" 480. Maybe after he gets his cut I may come across one and do it my way.
