Is getting a tan racist?

Some people are so easily offended that merely suggesting that a child is okay with wearing a costume and makeup of a celebrity of another race can get you fired that I wonder if getting a nice tan in the summer will be the next racist offense. Putting on "blackface" to deliberately mock African Americans is probably seen as unacceptable by most people. Not so far down this path would be using darkening makeup to look more like a black famous person as part of a costume for a holiday. But the way things are going I will not be surprised that soon a white person that goes into a tanning booth, or stays out in the sun too long on a summer day and is noticeably darker the next day will be seen as racist or guilty of "ethnic appropriation" of some other nonsense offense.

What is really annoying is that this sensitivity to color only goes in one direction. Having black actors play all the roles (or almost all the roles) in the Broadway show "Hamilton" is almost universally applauded. No one is up in arms over black actors portraying Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr or George Washington. I just wonder what would happen if a movie were made of MLK Jr.'s life, using a white actor with black makeup? Actually I don't wonder at all. Think of the great portrayal by Robert Downey Jr. as an actor playing a black man, but then again, that was comedy and part of the gag was that the white actor was acting as if he were really black, and a real black actor was constantly criticizing him for doing so. (In fact, if you haven't seen the movie "Tropic Thunder" it is well worth watching just for this part of the movie. Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his portrayal, truly hilarious.)

So think about what you might face at work, or on the street, or elsewhere if you get a tan that is just a shade too dark. Crazy world we live in.

Some of the greatest civilizations on earth have been built with 100% "racist" practices. From the Roman empire to China, Korea, Japan, The British Empire, too many to list. Don't forget that Abraham Lincoln himself penned and endorsed a Bill in Congress to limit property ownership to white people.
Refusal to learn from history...

Not a single person alive today had a choice of their skin color.

Not only that, through DNA technology, modern science has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that ALL humans came from Africa, one way or another.

In this day & age, it's folly to protest that "I KNOW I'm 100 % (insert your fancied choice of Italian, Irish, English, Spanish, Swedish, whatever here)"

If you are not a Democrat, then you are a racist no matter what your do or say. "Racist" is the Democrat term intended to define and defame anyone who does not toe the Party Line.

It`s ALL about votes. 13% of the nation is African American. That's why the demoncratic party sucks up to them. The funny part is the KKK I have read, was all demoncrat!

I know I'm 100% AMERICAN!

Which is more than many a democrat can say.

In years gone by having a tan was a mark of being low class, a mere field hand, hence the elaborate sun bonnets and parasols women used to preserve their peaches and cream complexions.
I note the Afro has gone out of fashion.

I read a interview of a very old black man many years ago. They had asked him what the biggest difference was that he had seen. He said the blacks aren`t near as black as they were when he was young. (Civil war era). I believe that too as I am big on looking at very old photographs and have noticed that.

To answer the original OP,, about the reverse actions by blacks portraying whites.

It's easy,, most white folks are not as racist as many of those of color.

From the song "Kingdom Coming" by Henry Clay Work, a civil-war era composer and songwriter:

De massa run? ha, ha!
De darkey stay? ho, ho!
It mus' be now de kingdom comin'. An' de year of Jubilo!

He six foot one way, two foot tudder,
An' he weigh tree hundred pound,
His coat so big, he couldn't pay de tailor,
An' it won't go half way round.
He drill so much dey call him Cap'an,
An he get so drefful tann'd,
I spec he try an' fool dem Yankees
For to tink he's contraband.

(General Burnside first addressed the problem of what to do with escaped slaves that reached the Union lines by declaring that, since the southerners considered them property, they were "contraband of war," and refused to return them as required by the Escaped Slave Act.)
