Oh man. It is headed this way. IRMA strongest hurricane in Atlantic weather history. 180 mph winds. We have our stuff ready, shutters, generator, cook stove, medicine, batteries, etc. etc. I just hope the roof stays on. ...and oh yeah a couple of guns for protection.

A hurricane hunter's plane registered Irma's gusts at 225mph today.............

The Weather Channel is saying a 20' high storm surge - which I think is above the highest elevation of some islands/keys.

IMO, it's already too late to leave - unless one has a personal airplane.

We are quite a way inland and when we moved in the neighbor next door said our property was one that was never flooded after them 4 hurricanes we got one year although you had to PARK up by the highway and HIKE down the flooded road to get here.

It's not just the people on the coast that have cause to worry. I'm 240 miles due North of Mobile, and big storms like this usually generate spin up tornadoes on their way by, long after the storm has lost it's punch and far out from the eye. We had several in our general area from Harvey, and also from Katrina.

You need to get the hell out of it's path. If the wind is as predicted it will flatten everything in it's path including YOU. Think hurricane Andrew. When you have 140-180 MPH winds you don't screw around with them. Not a time to be Mr. Macho Man. Get your ass out of there. Just my opinion from being in a few of these. :D

We live on the upper Gulf Coast 50 miles east of Mobile and 35 miles north of Pensacola. We have always ridden out the storms but after Ivan we said never again if its a Cat 3 or above. Plans have been made, non perishables including water have been stocked, vehicles gassed up, AND reservations made. We will watch the storm and watch the traffic patterns. Getting bogged down on Interstate is a terrible feeling!

Right now the path is not clear. It is supposed to make a sharp northern turn and come over the state, either up the middle or up the east or west coast. A couple more days and it's path should become clearer.

Pete, that's our plans. We are 400+ miles north-northwest of Miami so we have a day or more waiting than does Jimbo. Predicting these storms is in no way an exact science. If the front continues coming down our way the storm will definitely start turning north.........but who-knows-where north. Anyone in Florida and along the upper gulf should have already made their plans and "sitting on ready, waiting on go"! Just keep an eye on interstate traffic!

Concerning preparation, I don't know if you have a private well or municipal water, in either case you may lose water supply for some time. Fill your bathtub(s) with water just before the storm hits so you can flush your toilets by bailing water from the tub to the toilet tank(s). Glad I did it before we lost power and water for 7 days as a result of a severe storm. :)
Also don't forget to put some rocks in your pockets if you plan to go outside...let's hope this storm stays out to sea...good luck!

I watched the latest track and it seems to indicate it will bear slightly more eastward than they'd predicted. FL will take a hit; it's just a matter of how bad. Let's hope it gets pushed out to sea.

In the last 30 odd years the true actual speed of a HURRICANE has been changed bi obama and George by 25 miles an hour.
EXACTLY. The TROPICAL WIND SPEED has also been changed to match and all others to make predictions easy to give us stuff to worry about.
There is NO MANDATORY EVACUATION FOR MIAMI BEACH. We have been tested years back with a fake hurricane, was announced
for weeks for everyone to participate in to find out the best way to do things when a hurricane does come, the worst took
place on I 95 NORTH ALL THE WAY ALMOST TO THE BEGINNING OF FLORIDA. PLANES TOOK PICTURES EVERYWHERE, HELICOPTERS, NO ONE COULD INTERFERE, GIVE ACTUAL HELP. For the first time it showed every single flaw that took place.
I live here on Miami Beach, full time since AUGUST 13,1992, with my wife and 2 daughters, one 2 the other 3 1/2.
Today, my wife read to me that ABC said mandatory evac, as CNN and other fake news places.
No one is allowed to say that.
The new mayor, where did he come from, was on a tv station today, introducing himself as the mayor, saying I am issuing a
voluntary mandatory evacuation for MB. Get the hell out. HIS WORDS.

Interstate 75 was at a stand still here in the middle of the state 120 miles North of Orlando. Gas has been running out at the stations all day although trucks keep coming and more are on the way they say. I feel for everyone stuck on the interstate but they should have time to get far enough up the road to be safe. I have the generator and chain saw ready to go and plenty of gas for both. Enough food and water to last a while. I can run the well with the generator and have a gas stove and water heater. Here in the middle we just have to hope the trees don't fall on us and the power is back up in a few days.

I just saw photos from St Maarten... Doesn't look good. The famous airport at St Maarten has reportedly been destroyed. There are (literally) automobiles on their sides up against the walls of buildings. Bermuda is said to be "rubble".

I'm not sure I'd be hanging around if this thing is headed in your direction.

It is still looking bad for the East Coast in particular. If I lived in the Keys, Miami Beach, Palm Beach or any of the barrier islands or near the Intracoastal Waterway I would be gone by now.
