What is it with people and the latest whizbang phone, Nike's, or other overhyped and overpriced pos? I really don't understand what drives people to stand in line for days, riot, loot, even kill, for some irrelevant piece of consumer junk that will be obsolete next month. This new apple phone is a case in point. Total insanity.

Sheeple. Baaa, baaa, baaa.

However, I have seen a certain level of excitement on this forum about upcoming Ruger product announcements.

Toy - I was just about to say the same thing. ;)
People put pre-orders in, call "their guy" as soon as they hear about the new gun and buy em' up like crazy.
It's all about what you like. Not everyone acts like that, but it's the same mentality.
For me, I buy what I can afford, when I can afford it.

Y'all ain't answering the question. Why? Is there some genetic deficiency or psychological aberration that causes this behavior? I just don't get it. :?

I would never stand in line for an electronic product but I do try to keep up every few years when it comes to phones. I have had my HTC Evo for a few years now and would like to upgrade. When I am working I go out of town quite a bit and having the capability to find hotels and restaurants and maps is awesome to have.

Now say if Ruger came out with a super special must have limited edition .44 mag etc.etc.. I might be willing to stand in a line, maybe, it would have to be awfully special.

I guess if your point is simply to belittle someone for their behavior why even look for an answer to your rhetorical question. You seem to already have an answer in mind.

The reality, IMHO, is just as I stated in my post. Human nature. Maybe a combination of greed, envy, pride. We are all subject to like passions.

Dunno - nobody ever told me that....

Well, that is less than satisfying. Could be anything from 72 virgins to a free vasectomy.

I once knew a "doctor" who offered free vasectomies to the criminal elite, using a dull chainsaw or a rusty pocket knife!

Lighten up Chief. Just having a little fun.

Maybe we are all warped in different ways. I have never stood in line for a new product, much less riot etc .

I think what drives people is the same things that have always driven people. People would camp out in long lines to see (hopeful) blockbuster movies in the 20s, 30s & 40s. People stood in long lines and camped out to get the next 45 RPM record, or to buy tickets to see Elvis, etc. There were very seldom problems. People just want the latest 'stuff', whether it's a ticket to Gone with the Wind, a Hula Hoop, a ticket to see the Beatles, or a Cabbage Patch doll. Marketing knows how to create fads, and fads make a lot of people a lot of money.

What's different today that causes people to do wacky things to get this 'stuff'? Probably a combination of social media, connectivity and access... With a healthy dose of moral decline thrown in around the edges.

Virtually EVERYONE today has access to smart phones and an internet connection. You don't even need a job anymore. If you don't have one, the gubmint will buy one for you. I have seen homeless people who looked like last year's crops looking at little screens as they push their shopping carts around. When EVERYONE has access to EVERYTHING there is out there, then you're gonna get some of the bad ones showing up to take advantage of some of the good ones.

Simple as that... As I see it.

We are basically hunter/gatherers and so the more we accumulate the best chance we have of survival. I heard a bio-anthropologist state the other day that the down fall of man began when we started farming.

Because we are programmed to be consumers. I have to admit I have my prefferences, I would never spend a dime on a German car but like my fords.they are not any better but i LIKE them better.

iPhones 6 are as good as a 2012 HTC but have a loyal following. we dont make sense, were Muricans

I believe this explains it......

True. But most of us here don't have three days to spend standing in a line. We have jobs. Then again, in Pasadena some of the standees are paid to do so by folks that don't want to waste their time.

My son has used the iphone for his business (locksmith) since they came out. He stood in line from 0030 til 0800 to get one of only two of the 6+that were available on the first day in Murfreesboro, Tn. He uses it as his only computer and was fed up with the small screen. All in all his experience was positive. He met a customer he had only previously known through phone conversations. Gave out a bunch of business cards etc.

Remember "Beanie Babies",... or "Cabbage patch dolls"... remember the hysteria and lines when those were "the craze"?
Why,... don't know. Never have been one to stand in line for anything if it wasn't absolutely critical. A new phone just ain't critical to me.

Baby always wants more toys? Many ways of looking at this but we all have craved and scrambled-about. What can truly satisfy?

The 1841 book "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" pretty much sums it up. If folks stood in line for Tulips they'll stand in line for anything.

Considering my Dad stood in line and paid a couple hundred dollars to see a concert by someone called Costly, Shrill, Trash and Dung it would appear to be genetic starting with the old guys...

UMMM, I see that you are not a fan!!!

It's all in what you want and how much you are willing to pay, you don't have to understand it.

I was recently reading about a man who started a company where you can pay him to stand in line for you to get tickets, phones, or whatever high demand item you want. I guess it's all in how you look at a situation. Some mock others profit.
