Inventory vs caliber taste.

While taking inventory of the small arms locker for insurance purposes I noticed that my taste in calibers had an inverse relation to the number of firearms in the locker, at least when sidearms are concerned.

To clear this up. My favorite rifle caliber is .308 Win, I have 6 in inventory. Then I have 3 rifles in .223 Rem, a 30-06, 30-30, and a 7.62 x 39 Favorite caliber heavy.

So in revolvers I have 2 .44 Mags, 2 .357 Mags, and 2 .22LR. Complete balance.

Yet my least favorite Pistol caliber is 9 mm, but I have 8 of them in inventory. Is this driven by the current cost of 9 mm ammo? Or is it because I really never found a 9 mm I had faith in until I got the Springfield Hellcat specifically for concealed carry? .45 ACP is my favorite, still I only have 3 .45 ACP pistols., and 3 22LR pistols.

So do y'all just keep experimenting with pistols in calibers that ain't your favorite until you find one that actually has a purpose? Or is it just me?

Edit: make that 4 .45 ACP, been so long since I had the Old AMT HARBALLER Model out I almost overlooked it. Guess it's good to take inventory every so often.?

I use to have an inventory of ammunition in the house/garage and strangely I've never had an inventory of anything else in the house/garage.

Never been a fan of insurance for personal possessions, or life insurance or any other insurance. I do have insurance on our house and vehicle.

I try not to duplicate calibers.

Only exception is .308win, I have a BLR and an M1A1.

Everything else as far as rifles and handguns is one per

I just buy something that I found I like and have the money. I have no idea what ratio firearms are in my safe. I keep a notebook with a list of all the purchases and when they leave me where they went, but as far as knowing the caliber and auto vs revolver balance i have never taken the time to look. I think I’ve got more 9 mm than I want or I’ll use.

I seem to have only one single action pistol. An Old 7 1/2 inch US Arms Abilene in .44 Mag. Is that unusual?

Don't assume! You know what happens to u and me if you do? I don't have a safe large enough, so other containment has to be arranged. Large arms require mounts.

I was confused at first, not usual for me, in that I interpreted 'caliber' for ammo in inventory....
As for my take on it.. some gun inventory is just an investment in the future... from a practical standpoint 9mm might be the best 'caliber gun' to invest in. My primary caliber is the high priced 357 Sig but when I go on a road trip I take with me a 9mm pistol as well as a semi-auto carbine rifle in the same caliber... the semi-rational reasoning is that 9mm is going to be a lot easier to 'acquire' if I need more.

My gun safe isn’t too big, and that’s a good thing. I’m not a collector, what I have, I shoot. I have three rifles for hunting that are only for hunting which makes them practically safe queens. All three are Ruger American Gen 2’s, a .223, a .308 and a 450BM.
I have two .22LR semi autos, a Ruger Single 10 .22LR. A Sig P365 carry gun snd a Springfield Armory stainless 1911 9mm. My rifles that are my range fun guns are a Sig MCX Spear LT IR in 5.56 and a Savage Model 12 LRPV single shot right bolt, left port in .223 that is just incredible, with factory Hornady ammo no less.
I have tens of thousands of .22LR standard velocity ammo, five thousand .223, five thousand 5.56 and ten thousand 9mm. That’s all fun ammo. Hunting ammo doesn’t even break a hundred rounds of each caliber.

Well, every rifle I own has a hunting purpose. It's just that some don't get used that way anymore. 223, 556, 30-30, 7.62 x 39, 308 Win, and 30-06. All the others have gone down the road. Nowadays more rounds are expended in practice or practice for competition than hunting. YMMV.

My Florida Room is 20 x 27, I even have ammo under the pool table along with on every wall. Think I have more ammo than time left, so I've boxed up the Old Lyman Spartan and expended all primers and powder. (I Think)

If I had a bunch of guns in calibers I didn’t like, I think I might sell them so I could buy more guns in calibers I did like.

Right now my favorite calibers are 41 mag and 32 H&R Mag, and I’ve only got two guns in each caliber. But I’ve got 5 357 magnums. Problem is, all of my 357s are older models like Security Sixes that they don’t make anymore. So I don’t want to sell those.

For the longest time.. decades now .... I firmly believed in not selling or letting go of a gun... now I've turned 180 degrees and am planning to let go of most of them.... times change...

I'm kinda the same - if I'm already reloading for that cartridge I figure why not.

You never have to actually apply the gun to the problem, as they have deterrent value. I've owned a succession of rifles in 375H&H, and ever since there's been one residing here, not once have I had a rhino or pachyderm rummaging in my trash.

As long as there is a Zoo within driving distance, the possibility remains.

Given the price of stockpiling ammo these days, your post makes perfect sense to me.
