into the trenches

After I posted a photo of a trench art lamp I refurbished, one of our forum members, oldthings, sent me a doughboy helmet to do something with. I chose to rebuild it, fabricating a liner and replacing the chin strap. I gave it a new paint job, and added the insignia of the 34th Infantry Division. That's the one my grandfather and great-uncle were in during WWI. If they hadn't caught the flu on the way over and missed the war, they would have been wearing something like this in the trenches. Who knows, I may need a helmet before the next presidential election.

That's a Wilkinson blade on an Enfield bayonette. The 1917 S&W is a '37 Brazil model. The greatcoat is French. The old man isn't me---I'm younger and better looking. :wink:
