It's the only Blackhawk box I have without a catalog number. How long and about when were these used? Any extra value over numbered boxes?
Thanks,
Dennis.

Early Flattop box,, before they started using catalog info,, such as BKH-34 or BKH-36. Desirable in very good condition. RENE lists them at $470 in excellent condition.

Yep, neat box. Only used until the 6-1/2" guns were introduced, necessitating the use of the catalog info contender references.

So used only until they had more than one model. Makes sense.....

Actually, we've found that the non-catalog number box was probably used right to the end of flattop production at 42xxx. Never thought that was the case until a collector from California that we all know started giving examples of all his late boxed 4-5/8" flattops.
I do think there were a very few BKH-34 printed boxes made at least in 1959, just like there were a few BKH-46 printed boxes, probably also in 1959.
But the big printings of BKH-34 boxes didn't happen till at least the tail end off .357 flattop production. If anybody has an early transition .357 Blackhawk that has its original packaging, would really like to hear what type box it has, non catalog number or BKH-34
Another interesting note... kind of related, the 6-7/8" Mark I T678 never did get a catalog number on the end of its box. Was known only as "TARGET PISTOL" right up until they went to the red hinged box in 1973.

Here is another point. The new 6-1/2" length for the .357 starts showing up about 18xxx. That leaves about another 24,000 guns to be produced to the end of production for the .357 flattop. If Ruger was just using up the last of their stock then started using BKH-34 printed boxes, that would leave a big chunk (probably close to half of those 24,000) in 4-5/8" boxes.
Would Ruger really have had 12,000 boxes of any model in stock ready to use?
I'm thinking Ruger really didn't care what the box ends said on them, obviously not because the 6-7/8" Mark I continued to have a non-catalog number "TARGET PISTOL" box right to the beginning of red hinged boxes in 1972/1973.
2nd, there are only two BKH-46 printed boxes known. Yet non catalog number boxes for the 6-1/2" .44 flattop go right to the end of .44 flattop production. Would Ruger really have had roughly 10,000 boxes on hand ready to use up for the 6-1/2" gun? How about the 7-1/2" and 10" .44 flattops? Would Ruger have ordered thousands upon thousands of those printed boxes to have on hand assuming they would sell that many guns? I really don't believe so. And if that were the case, what models did they use all those BKH-47, BKH-40 and BKH-30 printed boxes on? I can't see them going to the burn pile, and the few that I do know of that were used with other models have end labels for that model.
I think when they got close to needing another batch of boxes, they just hit the "reorder" button and the supplier printed whatever their last order was.

Any idea how many non-cat-numbered but serial-numbered boxes are known to exist thru the end of the flattops, all barrel lengths?

Well, the only non-catalog number boxes for .357's were for the 4-5/8". All 6-1/2" or 10" are printed BKH-36 or BKH-30.

OK... one for the books.
BKH-34 #42164 was shipped March 1962 in a BKH-34 printed box. I am told the gun is pristine and the box is numbered to it.

Well, that's in the right range to be listed as a BKH-34, and it was shown on Bob's List with the ship date but no mention of the box. List updated with box info . . . thanks.
