IMR 4759 anyone?

Did I miss out on the recent discussion of IMR 4759?

I've never used it, thought some here spoke highly of it.

Ran across an 8# caddy for $189 unopened....but passed on it as being unknown.

Q: what IS it for, how good is it, and do I rush back to grab it before it's too late?

Nah it's not that great didn't impress me much I mean it works ok but unless your desperate for powder at $189 you might as well wait for the powder you really want, it's more of a rifle powder than it is handgun.

IMR's discretion of powder: This bulky handgun powder works great in the magnums, but really shines as a reduced load propellant for rifle cartridges. It's large grain size gives good loading density for reduced loads, enhancing velocity uniformity.

Besides magnum shotgun loads and it's excellent cast bullet and reduced rifle loads, it is terrific in big bore handgun loads. I've often gotten extreme velocity spread in the neighborhood of 10-15 fps and as to velocity itself, not far behind W296/H110!

Silhouette shooters loved it with good reason! 8)

PS: Many thanks to Flatgate for recomending I try some many years ago in my old 10" .44 Flattop. It shot it like a rifle! :wink:

W296 works better for me in my shorter barrels, I don't have any of them rifle length Revolvers. :lol:
By the response I don't think many people have tried it.

Barrel length matters little...If anything, 4759 may be better in shorter barrels than W296. Fire your 296 loads at night! :shock:

BTW...I LOVE W-296 for full tilt magnum use... :wink:

When very best accuracy counts, eg silhouette... 4759! 8)

BTW...Apparently Hodgdon says the decline of silhouette shooting is part of the reason they are letting 4759 "retire"....But 4759 made a comeback before so maybe...???

I'm not seeing any 1# jugs around and that 8#er I spotted is just too much for me for something I've not even tried.....but thanks for the tip & I'll be keeping it in mind should some appear.

I did run into 1# 4350 today, will give it a whirl as well.

Might be a fine powder for reduced loads shooting silhouette's, but for my 223, 44mag., 44-40 and 45-70 working up longer range loads it was just to fast burning and way to low velocity for my needs.

I use it in .30-30 with light bullets and .45-70. Great powder for those purposes and because its a shotgun powder costs alot less than rifle powders.

Are you sure that was an 8 pound jug? IIRC, 4759 came on a 4 pound jug as the powder is rather bulky. I got lucky locally and found a one pounder but would love to fine the bigger jug. The last time I bought 4759 years ago, the jug was a 4 pounder which is why I ask.
Try 17.0 gr. with the Lyman #457122 330 gr. HP bullet. Easy 1.5" from my Ruger #1. Nice fun load. Love it with 220 gr. cast bullets in my 30-06 a well. A good powder is somewhat limited in use.

Thanks for the tips on 4759. I'll be watching for a small beginning stash, as some of the favored uses mentioned here aren't what I have to use it in.

Yes, the 8 pound jug, biggest on the shelf, considerably larger than the 4# of other powders.

While shopping, I did pick up some new-to-me, 1# of Benchmark & 1# of Accurate 4350.

Working up possibles on my new Ruger Scout 308. Love it so far. It didn't care so much for 4064 but does seem to have interest in Varget.

I'm not much of a rifle guy but figured it's about time to take a look at something other than handguns.

Grab some Winchester 748 you see any it's a great rifle power.
