I WONDER

Just got back from the dr's office/lab for annual blood draw for my medical exam. I sat in the LARGE waiting room with about 50 people. Almost everyone of them was busily interacting with their 'smart' phone....literally the whole time each of them was on line or sitting/waiting. I always wonder.... what the hell are they doing on that thing? I doubt that they are busy at work duties; but maybe they are? Any ideas..???
I WONDER,
J.
I have a flip phone that makes every call I need to make---and since I realize I am a creature of habit and would likely join those 50 you saw and be flipping away at whatever nonsense there is, I refuse to get a smart phone. Saw a man and woman recently at my favorite little diner near here--he was a handsome Tarzan--her a curvy and beautiful Jane for sure--the whole time they sat there they flipped away on their smart phones---not speaking a word to each other. Being a recent widower, I marvelled at this, I wanted to beckon her over to my table and gab with her, let him wear out the phone keys by himself.

They are likely on Facebook.

An honest man does exist!

Watching porn in a public place does not seem to make much sense to me. Unless maybe the porn does not trigger any reaction since a normal "reaction" might prove embarrassing in public.

Personally I spend time catching up on the news (FOX News has a decent app) and playing some word games or bridge to keep my brain working. (Solitaire games on the smartphone are seemingly made too easy to win about 75% of the time, a much higher rate than when playing with a real deck of cards. Makes it too easy and not as much fun.) I do the NYT Wordle every day and sitting in a waiting room is the perfect place to do it.

I tend to play games, not as much in my PCP's office but in Doc's offices where you are waiting on getting called in for your appointment @ 0900 and you are waiting till 1000 or 1030!

I have one of those portable DVD players and it'll just about handle two average length movies on a charge, maybe a slightly bit more. When I was doing the chemo early on, I'd charge it up overnight and take it, a couple of movies and some ear buds and sit through the roughly three to three and a half hours while plugged into the machine that pumped their poison into me. It made the time go pretty fast. I have roughly 1,100+ DVDs to choose from. I started picking them up from flea markets, swap meets. pawn shops and yard sale when my wife started showing signs of dementia. I just never stopped when she passed.
When the chemo emo ended and I started radiation, that was every day. The treatment lated less than ten minutes. Then they held off a bit and started a different form of combination treatment of radiation and chemo. That session was usually 4.5 to 5 hours long. So, I brought a book with me.
Seems after a treatment they have these lead vials that held whatever they used. They usually threw them away or maybe sold them as scrap. One day the nurse came up to me and asked me if I had any use for lead? Now I hadn't ever mentioned being a shooter or reloader or anythng of the sort so that surprised me. I said that could use some so she said they had a bunch of the vials that were used to hold radioactive materials and I was welcome to take them. She brought one out for me to see and I'm guessing it weighed close to four pounds, give or take. Estimated weight is approximately 140+ pounds. These things are I'm positive for all practical purposes 100% pure lead.
At 87 years old, I doubt very much I'll be casting any balls for BP shooting so I should sell the stuff. Shipping would be prohibitive in cost so the offer is for anyone within driving distance of Tucson.

In the environment you describe, I'm most often listening to an audiobook, scrolling through the news, memorizing lyrics for my acoustic guitar duo or playing games like sudoku/puzzles (anything that requires rubbing a few brain cells together).

Since I always have an iPhone with me, sitting and waiting at the doctor or DMV isn't such an annoying PITA anymore. I do make a point of going to places like that early so I'm not swept aside behind an exponential backlog of inevitable delays as the day progresses.

I NEVER open anything requiring a password in a public place. My personal business/finances are not for hacking oxygen bandits.

If I'm with somebody, I put the phone in my pocket and pay attention to them.

I've played a lot of games of Sudoku while in waiting rooms, riding on ferries, taking a dump, other times when of forced or voluntary inactivity. Not a great use of time but maybe a bit less mindless than TikTok.

I HAVE 3 WORK APPS ON MY PHONE.
I COORDINATE MANUFACTURES SUPPLIES AND DELIVERY
I FACILITATE SUPPLY RELOCATION

I believe that smart phones are far worse than flip phones for being a phone. The sound quality is horrible.
Sound quality is abysmal. The telco has stuffed more traffic into the system than it can handle. T-Mobile regularly drops my signal to 4G while providing me with echoes, one side dead (hello, hello, are you there?) no announcement of text messages AND intrusive spam calls which I never answer. Add to that the garbage spying that the O/S AND the "apps" are doing I don't see how our government hasn't come down on this. After all THEY get the same treatment... don't they? Or are they special individual entities that receive preferential treatment?

I carry a tablet for time wasting because I don't like staring at a tiny screen and trying to type on a teeny keyboard. Mostly, I use my tablet for books or crossword puzzles.
I often say loudly when someone asks me to check something on the web... "Only an idiot would struggle surfing the web on a 6"x3" screen when I have a 32" monitor at home" :-) I bet if the feds banned TV and computer screens larger than 6" they would scream bloody murder.

My computer monitor for my desktop is 42”.

My phone at 6” is much easier to read this forum than the larger computer screen. So I end up on my phone or iPad more often than my computer.

Like ordering something on Amazon. Today it was air filters for the A/C. They are cheaper than Home Depot and easier to find on line.

Heck, I’ve been inside Home Depot and stood there in the aisle ordering on my phone what I’m looking for inside the store. It’s easier than tracking down someone to help me locate a specific product.

You know what? You old people irritate me sometimes.

My mom is 80 something. She refuses to learn how to take or send pictures with her phone.

You need to get over this thing of: “I’m old and can’t learn new technology.”

If she would bother to learn. She could text pictures back and forth with my daughter. It would bring them closer together. But no, she won’t.

So ya know what? If you say I don’t need a smart phone. Think of all the young family members you aren’t communicating with.

Rent off…

No let me repeat that last sentence.

IF YOU DONT WANT A SMARTPHONE. THINK OF THE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS YOU DONT COMMUNICATE WITH.

I have used the Home Depot website while in the store. If they have the item in stock it will usually tell you what aisle & bay it is in. Sometimes I still have to hunt a little but it gets me closer.

I wonder, if when news papers came out, old people were agast because "they have their heads buried in the paper all the time! All they do is sit there and read."

Its not that they cant; they dont want to. Think about that, kid. Its easier to say i cant do that, than suffer the fit when they honk you off by saying i dont want to, now go away kid, ya botha me. I read thats why people thought einstein was an idiot at anything but math.

I think some take reluctance by choice to being a Luddite... it's not necessarily so.

While "some" things "may" be easy with an "app" for me and others who choose not to rely on the phone as much as some, nothing takes the place of a full screen, a keyboard, and mouse.

At almost 82, I can do, and learn, anything that I want to do or learn. After spending my life working for one of the largest multi-national technology firms, (44 yrs), I enjoy being able to make decisions that don't necessarily comply with the masses. Simply put, I have found that I don't need a smartphone for any portion of my life; the things that 'young people' find important are not important to me. As far as 'communicating' is concerned, I prefer not to have my day (or evening) interrupted by unsolicited messages whether text or telephone. After 44 yrs of being required to respond almost immediately to outside influences, I enjoy the luxury of letting my antiquated phone message machine help me decide IF I want to respond to a communication, and, WHEN I want to respond. So far, so good.

Probably one reason you have enjoyed a long, productive life!

I get what you are saying. And certainly, if your system works, go for it. But more to my point. Phones have a quiet mode, called "Focus, or Personal Time" You set the time you don't want to be disturbed and it will silence everything. Or you can have it set up for specific things. For example, my phone is on "Do Not Disturb" from 7:30 pm to 8am. But if my wife or daughter tries calling, it will ring for them. So using the technology available silence can still be golden for those users if they want. My daughter's school requires them to have a phone. They use it for different school related projects, schedules etc. But she uses the Do Not Disturb during school hours. So I can text her, and she can respond when she finishes whatever class she's in.

Man, she's a senior this year.

My parents were complaining about the phone ringing in the middle of the night. I explained how they could set it up. But again, they just said they don't want to learn. I guess my rant came about because of my conversation with them. My dad is days away from 94 and my mom is 86. So they could still learn if they want.
