My Father in law and I went to a Ducks Unlimited Sportsman's Bash on Saturday. Dad's not a gun guy, but he knew I'd be interested. It was at the Galena MD Volunteer Fire Company.

Be sides the 20+ guns that were up for the main raffle, they sold tickets to raffles for other guns on different tables. there was the 410 table, $5 table and the $3 table. Each table started off with about 12-15 guns and any winners got their pick. As it was a Ducks Unlimited event, most of the guns were shotguns, but there were some rifles mixed in.

The $10 table had a nice Henry .44mag rifle I had my eye on, and the $5 table had a CVA Wolf inline muzzleloader package that I figured I'd grab for my cousin. There really wasn't anything that really caught my eye on the $3 table, except a Ruger 10/22 Tactical. It only caught my eye because it was the only Ruger in the place.

So, I bought tickets for all the tables...and wouldn't you know it, they called the number off one of my $3 table tickets...so, of course, I had to give the lonely Ruger a good home...

Since no gun is ever truly "free" (or just $3...though I did accomplish that once...), I already started shopping for it. I've got a scope and rings, extended mag release (my fat fingers don't like the OEM one) and a mag loader/unloader kit on order. Didn't know about it when I placed the order, but I think I'll be getting a bolt release plate, too.

So, what's a good source for the BX-10 and BX-25 mags? I figured I'd get one more 10-round and 2 25-round mags. Midway seemed to have good prices, but I'm sure you folks here have better connections/sources...I'll ask over in the Rimfire forum, too.

Haven't taken any pics yet...figured I'd do that after I got the scope mounted, as it's pretty boring, now.

Not sure what I'll be doing with this yet...just plinking or maybe some pest control up at camp.

Congratulations on your win. I think a Ruger 1022 tactical would be just the one to take. I never had that kind of luck but I wish you well and show what it looks like when you’ve got it done.

Factory rounds for the 10/22 are for sure the way to go. Now there are some aftermarket parts that will enhance the rifle better than factory. I have not messed with mine in a couple of years but usually the first thing to fix is the trigger on these critters.... after that is the magazine release... I may have to pull mine out and mess with them to remind myself of all this stuff.

I thought the 10-22 was like the entry code into the club house? That's the first gun for most innocents who can't believe a simple, fairly cheap gun could be that much fun to shoot. Then they start to tinker with it, and then look at other Rugers. Then they can justify an older Single Six, since ot uses the same ammo and won't cost that much more. Then, once they realize how much fun a revolver can be, they can justify a larger caliber Blackhawk becase "it's just one more small gun!" After this, there is usually no cure, other than buying a bigger safe and hiding the purchases from the wife.
( My wife loves me, so I can buy all the 'investments' I want!)

It actually is my first 10/22. I never really had a use for a semi-auto .22, since it has only been within the last year or two that PA allowed semi-autos for hunting. I had a bolt .22 and a Remington pump .22 that I used for small game hunting growing up. Then, we got out of small game hunting.

I always liked the 10/22s and their versatility, but never could justify buying another .22 rifle.

I was toying with the idea of getting a takedown model to stash up at camp for varmint control (takedown in pieces can be stashed in something that doesn't scream "THIS IS A RIFLE")...but never got around to finding one.

Galena huh? Nice town. I live on the eastern shore and used to drive for a company and that's the area I went through almost daily. Twinnys is golden!!

I wrote, "Factory rounds for the 10/22 are for sure the way to go" and I meant factory magazines..... but the problem with a 10/22 is you really need at least 2. I'm not making this up.

Congratulations on winning a gun!

We go to several FoNRA events annually,, and in general,, I do buy several different tickets. Over the years,, I've won several guns. You can't win it you don't play!

And,, know this; The money raised does go for a good cause.

BTW; Just before I came to the Forum,, I bought a $25 ticket (1 of 100 tickets) for a Ruger GP-100 in .357. Maybe my luck will re-appear!

I am a long time member of the forum and have a bunch of Rugers, but I don’t have a 10-22! I am not sure how I never got around to buying one. I remember really wanting to get one back as a pre teen over a half century ago. I couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted more, a Ruger 10-22 or Remington Nylon 66. Actually, I got neither as my parents were not gung ho on the idea. I had to put several thousand more pellets through my pellet gun instead.
I do have a Thompson Center .22 semi auto that is sitting in the safe. I bought it when my boys were in scouts close to 25 years ago. I doubt it has seen 150 rounds.

Blume, personally, I would’ve said “GI Joe” …
AND, I actually never got around to getting a 10/22 either. I bought a Marlin (actually Glenfield) model 60 way back in the day as my semi auto .22, and won a Remington 597 a few years ago which is still unfired and NIB. Neither has a threaded muzzle though, and as my son is waiting for the paperwork to go through on a new .22 suppressor I might actually get around to picking up a 10/22 lite in the near future. This suppressor is rated up to 5.7x28 so I might also have to get an LC Carbine to go with my Ruger 5.7.

I had to check and it seems if I check my data base and inventory I've 'lost' a few... this is all I have now and the top one is technically not a 10/22.

the bottom one pretty much drills one hole at 50 yards... well groups the size of a dime with the right ammo.

Well, I finally got most of my accessories for the "Major Award" (shades of A Christmas Story) installed...I'm just waiting for some off-brand flip-up scope caps to come off the boat from China and a couple BX-25 mags from a member here.

Anyhow, I finally took the time to install the accumulated accessories and took some pics of the (almost) final product:

I didn't break the bank with the accessories. Some will berate me for "cheaping out", but I surely don't see myself using this rifle anywhere near enough to justify dropping a mint on "top of the line" stuff.

Anyhow, here's the mod list:

  • Call it "Trashco" all you want, but I've had Tasco scopes on a couple of my rifles for over 35 years with no issues. This one had surprisingly good reviews, too.

  • UpLula loader/unloader kit - Amazon
  • 10/22-marked case - Cabela's

As it worked out, I think the only thing I really paid for was the case. everything else, was purchased by redeeimg rewards points from Discover and Cabela's.

I picked up the "M-1 Carbine" version and got some additional 25 round mags. Good thing I did because the liberal "Westies" outlawed anything over 10 rounds in WA State. Goes well with my 1943 G.I. Carbine. Also got the wife the International (always wanted one for myself, so she was the excuse). Looks good with the factory mag and a 2-8x Burris scope.

Last day we were up at camp for PA hunting season, I finally loaded up all the mags (4 10-rounders and 2 25-rounders) with the 3 types of ammo I have on hand and shot at grass clumps in the snow in the field.

All mags worked flawlessly and the little rifle hit dead-on. It was a great shooting rifle and both my dad and I wished we could have used it back when we hunted small game…it'd be the perfect little bunny popper.

Anyhow, the ammo I had was as follows:

• Remington bulk box - had 2 misfires with these crappy rounds…not unusual from this batch.
• Ancient white-box Super X
• CCI Mini Mags

In all, I was happy with the little rifle...not bad for "free".
