A few weeks back I inherited some guns. My Dad has now been gone for 19yrs and my Mom just recently passed. After dividing up the guns, I received a very nice stainless/laminated stocked 10/22 that I thought was just a run of the mill model. I was wrong. It is a 1993 stainless carbine, model #01116 with serial #236-30171 that I received. The color of stock is a black/grey/green, but the green is very pale and unless you get a light on it to make it shine. These apparently started in 1991 as being Walmart exclusives.
I found this to actually be a Walmart "Special" model . What makes it special, is the stainless, laminated special color stock, 18.5" barrel, factory installed sling swivels and black nylon sling with "red" Ruger stitching, all from the manufacture as a package. I hear the factory also included a scope mount, but my 10/22 didn't have one, so I don't really know if it had one, but I got a silver scope rail just last week and installed it for a scope I mounted, without knowing it was a limited special thru the model # and seeing others I didn't know about online.
Didn't realize it until I did some research that Ruger shaved the width of the front sling mount to make it go between the barrel band slot and held by the band's screw. I at first thought it was a mistake and my Dad did the work as he was also a independent gunsmith and machinist and had done this to the front sling. Nope, it was done by Ruger, by all the photo's I've seen of the front sling mounting system. To make it even better 10/22, it has the "metal" trigger housing, whereas during sometime in 1994 Ruger went to the plastic trigger housing by what I've seen on other sites that speak of these Walmart Special's.
My Dad worked at Walmart during this time in the Sporting Dept and he did the actual gun ordering at that time and realized these were being sent to Walmart in very limited supply, which at the time, there were a lot less Wally's back in '93 and actually bought one for himself.
Here's where the box comes in. While cleaning up the home and getting rid of, dividing up and giving away 60yrs of stuff from my parent's, my brother went up into what is the attic over the garage and brought down a few gun boxes. Low and behold I saw a Ruger box. PAY DIRT! It was the original 10/22 box the gun came in and the Walmart price sticker/model type still on box. Price was $189.95 on the end flap, cheaper for employee discount.. So my now new to me Ruger has its original home back.
I also saved from the trash, the original box my inherited Remington 700 CDL 35 Whelen came in as a bonus. My brother said there's more gun boxes up in the attic, so maybe I'll get more boxes. I saved all the gun boxes of the guns I bought from the past many years, so I guess I'm just like my Dad and didn't know it.
