In addition to the part-time job I've had since 2011, I was recruited by USDA for a second part-time position as a "non-traditional agriculture production loss adjuster"(terminology close to that anyway). This seems to be an off-shoot of the proliferation of greenhouses, orchards, and "niche production" of specialty crops.
Yesterday was sort of a "what do you know" field day as a group of agency folks toured a "high tunnel" operation and inventoried the growing crops. Turns out I remember much more about vegetables than I expected and was able to impress the state headquarters people.
Downside is now I have to go through the entire hiring, background, vetting process even though I already have credentials from USDA under a different agency. Oh well, they're paying the tab so it's on-the-clock time.
I'm pretty hyped about the job as it compliments and provides income during a period that is short with my other job. Also spreads me out over a wider area of the state.
