My wife woke me up Sep 11, 2001 and said there was something going on the TV. For the next few hours I was transfixed. I recorded the news on a VHS tape on my VCR. I cannot bring myself to watch it again. Later that day, I began to write the following.

PEOPLE OFTHE TOWERS

As the evening sun sets, something is different.
No longer are there shadows on the horizon.
Where once shadows moved across the land,
There is an emptiness.

I speak not of tall buildings that housed the populace,
but of the people themselves.
Men, women and even children graced this land.
Tis their shadows I speak of.

Their shadows moved quickly and slowly.
They ran, they jumped, they played.
Voices, laughter and gurgles, innocents all.
Now no more.

Then the people who came to save them,
fearing not for their own lives.
Just doing their jobs in helping less fortunate
They gave their lives heroically.

Left are heartbroken families and friends.
Left are memories of the people.
But, they will live on and be remembered
in the hearts, minds and souls of those who knew them.

So speak of them, tell their stories to all who will listen.
Share their lives with all. So they be remembered and live on.
Let all who knew them not, come to know,
that they will not be forgotten and live FOREVER.

And yet every 9-11 I see and hear fewer and fewer reminders of the day. Ask a child not born in 2001 and they usually know nothing about it. Schools won't teach it because it paints some people as the terrorists they are.
