That’s exactly what transpired when all the prospective immigrants came in through Ellis Island. Unpronounceable foreign names were frequently shortened or changed to an Americanized version on the spot by an immigration officer. In retrospect it may not have been a bad idea. There should be a law that when foreigners come to this country they need to be assigned a normal American name, even if they come just for a visit. Just like all of those customer service folks who are talking to us from India or wherever and tell us that their name is "Ron" or something like that. I know that in some countries, like Italy, a newborn has to be given a name acceptable to the authorities. A law like that here would not be a bad idea, but then we would never have had a Shaquille O'Neal on the basketball court.
I have to wonder how many pages of birth certificates it took to register that one.My favorite Awkward Puppet

Wait! You changed your name from 'Blume' to 'Just Blume'? Why would you want to make your name longer? The irony is I did the exact opposite at age 25... I had my name legally changed to: 'just Blume'
