For the second time in a few months I went to print a something and even though the black ink reservoir was nearly full I could only get blank sheets. Wiping the cartridge jets and contacts with water and then alcohol did not work as it sometimes did in the past and if not I'd have to run out to a store and get yet another black cartridge that would ultimately clog up.

So I decided to print the label in dark purple, OK it's GTG. Then I had an epiphany! Would it default to mixing all three colors to make black if the faulty black cartridge were removed? Eureka! It printed in black'ish, more of a dark grey!

Not a cheap workaround but it will work till I replace the printer, I'm done with HP.

No, HP's code doesn't have it any longer. And why? so they can sell more ink! :)
 
I use to have an HP and while I only used my printer about once every 1-2 months, each time it required an update and then wouldn't work properly. I spent many hours on the phone with tech service. I finally got rid of it and got a Canon. Same problems there. Then I got an Epson. Only prob is it only requires updates every other time I go to use it.
 
Love my Brothers LC61 printer, I’ve had it for over ten years and never had any problems. Self cleans every week, doesn’t need software updates and Brothers only uses a few ink cartridges and they are always readily available online. If you have to get a new one I’d recommend looking at Brothers.
 
ROI dictates an inexpensive 'laserjet' printer, but before you jump, check the replenishables for price (cartridge, fuser and drum). Also look at the reviews for the various models.
Ink cartridges get expensive very quickly! Oh, for the return of the 'dot matrix' printer, tractor feed paper and cheap ribbons!
 
We had an old HP printer for years and it worked pretty well until my wife decided to use non-HP ink cartridges. It recognized they weren't HP cartridges and right away it started acting up real bad. Well, she bought a new one and tossed the old one and it really has been a not so fun POS! I told her next time we'll be buying and Epsom or some other brand printer. I'm really not fond of their laptops either due to crappy experiences.

Recomendation. Get an Epson Ecotank. No more cartridges. You just fill the reservoirs with ink, and you're good to go for about 6 to 12 months for average household use. They are a little expensive to start with, but you get it all back and then some in a few months by the money you save not buying ink cartridges. I've had mine for about 3 years, and I think I've only gone through 3 sets of ink bottles. A set of ink bottles, which typically lasts about a year for household use, are around the same as the cost of a color and black cartridge for a typical printer (which will usually only last a month or two). Another tip. If you don't print a lot, keep a colorful picture on your desktop and print a copy of it about once a week. It'll help keep the inkjets from clogging up if you do.

A downside of that is (at least for an Epson inkjet printer) the nozzle cleaning pad will eventually become saturated and must be replaced....I did some research and it would be a PITA so I finally reached out to a computer repair guy for the price of him doing it. His cost was almost the cost of a new printer. Ended up tossing the old one and selling the backup ink cartridges on eBay.
 
I know this seems to be a Ink/bubble jet printer thread, but maybe it would be time for some of you to invest in a color laser printer. I am on my second color laser printer and I am very happy with them. My Dell finally needed the main laser engine replaced and that would be cost prohibitive, so I now have a Brother HL-L8360CDW that has printed just under 8,300 pages. We use it every day, BUT it can sit for a month and fire right up! I use cheap Ebay toner cartridges and this printer has NO problems with them. I also have a Brother black & white laser printer that is seldom used, but will fire right up after a couple of months of sleep mode. I, like many of you, was sick of dried out ink jet cartridges that I couldn't get clean and needing to use only factory cartridges. I had to throw away too many good cartridges from several different models of ink jet printers. Having peace of mind is worth it to me these days.
 
I had an HP for a long time with no problems.
I have been through 3 HP printers in the last year. They will print a page perfectly, then they claim there is no paper, when I can see paper in the feeder.
The first one, I took apart to find a broken paper sensor, which is not replaceable. The second and third ones did not survive the beating, slamming and eventual kicking and shotgun blasts that I administered while trying to fix the paper issue.
I now have a Brother printer.
 
You can go to Staples and buy a $500 printer, or you can run to wally world and get two for $50.
Your choice.
FWIW, the Wally world ones won't take much abuse.
 
Ok, trebor44 - all 4 toner cartridges (Brother TN433 type) for $60.00 total on Amazon. The B/W one does 4500 sheets, and the color ones do 4000 sheets. With 8,300 pages printed so far - ONE paper jam! Fusers don't go out very often. I was in an office environment for 15 years and never heard of a fuser needing to be replaced. Toner cartridges drop in easily to a pull-out drawer. NO rail to lube. I spent MUCH more on CANNON ink cartridges and always at an inconvenient time. The low toner display will give you a long time to buy toner
 
I think all these printer companies "estimate" of the number of pages their different elements can print is a total farce. I gave on ink jets about 15 or more years ago and went to lasers.... So far so good, have one basic black and white single page one and a brother color that will print both sides of a page. The color brother one takes 4 cartridges that run about $80 each and they last me about 2 months. The interesting thing is they almost always run out with in a week or so of the first one needing replacing.....
 
I liked HP printers. Hand a nice all in one. Then Microsoft released a new version of Windows and HP refused to provide a compatible driver. Switched to an Epson Workforce and haven’t looked back.

What irritated me most was I used my machine for business. For several weeks I had to email stuff to the office to get it printed then drive to the valley to get it.

By the way, I had an old Canon give away printer and Canon had a driver for that before long.

HP just wanted to sell new printers when folks had perfectly good machines. They
 
When my HP Office Jet Pro 8025 dies I will be looking for something else. Do not like having to be connected to the internet just so they can monitor my usage and ink levels and charge accordingly. Then lots of time it says printer offline, the everything has to be reset! When my mother passed and I was in charge of the probate I did go through a lot of ink and paper which worked out pretty well. I miss my old HP printers, use one at work and three of us used it constantly with no problem. I would even print of both sides.
 
I went laser printer shopping recently and was saddened to see that most makers are going to a monthly fee option for ink......That's after dropping $300-$500 for their printer.....

I finally decided to stick with my old Brother black and white laser with a new printer cartridge and clean out the waste cartridge....works like new again....and I really don't miss color printing
 
I am not a fan of HP. We don’t print much, and the cartridges would always dry out, and maybe (or not) you could get it working again. The latest is a cheepee 3700, I finally got it disconnected after initially signing up for the ink subscription, wasn’t easy to cancel.
Made a document with several colors spelled out in large font and set to print that color, and have a reminder in my phone that reminds me to print that every 2 weeks. So far it hasn’t clogged.
 
Some of the innards of these laser printers boggle my mind.... that waste cartridge... and my two sided printer had me stumped for a day.... had a paper jam, at least that's what the printer driver said but I could not find any jammed paper in it.... until I finally took all the cartridges out... the waste thingy and the drum that was under all that and low and behold in the very bottom of the printer was a piece of crinkled up paper... it seems to print on the reverse side the paper gets flipped and run underneath everything and back through somehow....
