I have an old Winchester Model 190. I am looking to mount a sling stud in the factory wood forearm. I bought the stud kit that has the nut. I have never done this nor do I have the "proper" drill bit.

Does anyone know the proper bit sizes to drill? I know I need to counter sink both side of the hole. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Well, Brownells does sell a kit for sling stud mounting. However, It can be done w/o a kit.
Remove the forearm, & find the area you want to mount the stud. place masking take over that area. Next, find the very center of the forend where the stud needs to go. mark that.
Measure the shaft of the stud and get the closest sized drill bit to that shaft size. I strongly recommend a drill press with everything square to drill the shaft hole. The tape will help prevent splintering of the wood. Drill the shaft hole. Next, you should only have to slightly countersink the nut side of the stud in the inside of the forend. Just enough to hold the nut, and allow the forend to fit back properly. A drill bit the size of the nut, with the end ground flat will work as a countersink for the nut. Again, a drill press with everything square will give a professional look.
The outside of the forend where the sling will be doesn't need to be countersunk.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can post a pic later. I used the stud for the stock on th forearm because I couldn't use the nut. It turned out nice and the bipod I bought looks amazing.

It turned out about as good as I could have hoped for. Snug fit. Adjustable height. Easily removed and replaced.
