How often do you deep clean your 10-22?

My friend and I took our girls to the range yesterday for a rimfire extravaganza. Normally I only run a boresnake with some corrosion-x through the barrel after a range session and call it good for cleaning.

It's about once a year I take the rifle down for a deep cleaning. Over the past year I have gone through about 4 of the 550 federal bulk packs and hardly had any jams.

Just curious if anyone is as lax about deep cleaning their 10-22's
 
My regular shooter 10-22's are used until they start jamming enough to irritate me, other wise I just keep shooting them. Usually 2000 rounds will be the starting point and usually I just grab a different one. When a cleaning is needed here is my quick and easy method.

Remove the barreled action and lock the action open.

Hold a finger over the chamber end of the barrel and squirt some gun scrubber down the barrel.

Put a finger over the other end and give it a few shakes back and forth.

Remove the finger from the chamber end and tip it up so the crud and liquid runs out into the open action.

Hose the action and bolt out with the can of gun scrubber.

Apply a few drops of oil here and there and a few down the barrel.

Put it all back together and continue shooting.

I only pull them completly apart when I am at home and have the time, (usually only every couple of years). :o

If it is not broke don't try to fix it. :D
 
Generally, about once a year - usually a day when it's well below zero outside and the wind is whipping up a whiteout. Gotta do something to pass the time, so I go through both safes and give everything a strip-down cleaning.
 
Pretty much what wwb said. I do run some chemicals through the barrel though if I shoot it a lot. After almost thirty years of neglect that anyone would be ashamed to admit the thing still shoots like it did when it was new. Every time I shoot it I am amazed at the accuracy. An amazing piece of engineering! :)
 
Take it apart when I get it home from the store and give it a good cleaning and lube, then shoot it. If it starts having problems, I'll do it again, otherwise just keep shooting.....
 
If you ask 20 different people how often and how they clean they clean their 10/22's, you'll probably get 20 different answers.

I clean the bore and apply a light coat of oil after each outing.

A total breakdown and cleaning after about 1000 rounds or so....and being careful not to over lubricate. I don't like jams, or malfunctions, so if I can prevent them, so be it. I like to call it "preventive maintenance."

So far my method has worked well for me, I can't remember the last time I had any problems.

That being said I usually shoot a 550 count brick each outing so it's getting detail stripped every 1100 rounds or so..

I can't stand a weapon that has malfunctions..
So far with my 10/22 only dud rounds every couple hundred with the Federal 550 Wal-Mart Bulk..
I clean the bore after each outing with the bore snake & never run a cleaning rod down the muzzle, I use the handy dandy hole that I drilled for that & clean from the chamber end..

Only once in the last three years have I got "Anal" about cleaning the 10/22 & even removed the firing pin & extractor plus stripped the trigger group...
There was some carbon in there but not all that much..
 
Everytime one of these how often do you clean your firearms posts come up I feel like an oddball. I'm sure it has to do with the 6 years in the Marines. I can't put a dirty firearm in a safe. I rarely shoot anything and it doesn't get cleaned that night.

I enjoy the detailed maintenance of firearms. I got pretty nuts and use q tips everytime.

The only thing I own that I don't clean is my AK's. I figure that helps balance me out a bit.

I'm with you, with the exception of being in the Marines. I clean it every time that I shoot it. I actually enjoy breaking everything down and cleaning out all of the hard to reach places. It is like therapy to me.
 
I used to be that way, it's how I was taught. Then when I grew up and began to think for myself I read some writings of those much older and wiser than myself and began to question the practice. The bottom line is that I'm not in the Marines, military practice is not necessarily relevant to the civilian world and that the world will not end if I do not thoroughly clean my guns every time I shoot them. It is simply not necessary unless you're shooting blackpowder, corrosive primers or Uncle Sam's M4. Just as I don't change my oil every time I leave the driveway. I've got over $50,000 invested in my collection and wouldn't do it any other way if it didn't work. All I do is wipe them off after shooting and clean them when they need it.

While it has yet to happen in this thread, those that would call me lazy or negligent are unwilling to do it any other way.
 
You are suppose to clean em?????? Can I do that with a high pressure garden hose & dish detergent????

I was brought up in the school of "If you shot it today, you clean it tonight."

Used to be I'd do just that w/ ANY of my guns. Then I started getting a bit lax, at least w/ my 10/22. :eek:

Today, it gets a patch w/ some solvent at the end of every shooting day. Probably every other bulk pack (550s), it gets a bronze brush and a field strip cleaning of the bolt. Trigger ass'y gets a detail strip a couple of times a year, while the bolt gets its detail strip every few years. Magazines all got detail stripped, cleaned and adjusted evenly a couple of years ago: first time for any of 'em, which I've been collecting since I bought the rifle around 1980-81.

As a general rule, despite my slip ups, all my guns do like being clean. It's kinda like driving a freshly washed car: something just "feels" better!

Rick that is the way I was brought up.You have fun shooting all day but you better have time to clean it that evening.and clean it all the way not just run a swab down the barrel.I duck hunt 4 days a week and in the evenings my Benelli SBE is cleaned right down to the trigger group.

Normally I break mine down for a thorough cleaning about twice a year. After each time I shoot it I clean the bore and bolt face and apply lube.

:roll: :roll: Been that way about Rugers forever! :oops: But that is why I own Rugers! :) I think it was around 8000 to 9000 rounds thru my Slab Side Mark II before I even cleaned it. Heck I am out there to shoot! :wink:
 
Me too! But then again, I also shoot near every day and if I cleaned them every time I shot them, not only would several be worn out from cleaning, replete with boogered screw heads, shooting and cleaning would be all I ever did!
 
Rick, I pretty much clean every other gun as soon as I'm done shooting it. There are only 2 excepions...my 10-22 and my Benelli super nova. Neither gun is prone to malfunction...even if the action is crapped up with crud.

The Benelli went into the drink all the way into the mud at the bottom of the pond. I took it back to the blind, took the barrel off pushed a wad of paper soaked with rem-oil through the barrel, sprayed the crap out of the action with rem-oil and shot it the rest of the day without a hiccup. Got back to the trailer, stripped it down and cleaned/oiled...no rust, no problems.

I'm just amazed at how dirty and crapped up the ruger can get and still not skip a beat.
 
My duty and carry guns every time I shoot them. My others and especially my 22's only when they get wet, stop working right or I am bored with nothing else to do.
 
I probably over-clean my 22's.....preventive maintenance I call it. I figure if I'm going to take the time to travel to some remote area, set up targets, load magazines etc, I want the firearm to function properly. Don't need the frustration of the gun malfunctioning.

I'm with you "SocialD", cleaning my guns is half the fun. On the Q-Tips, you need to try the one's that Brownells sell with the wooden stick. They are an ideal size for the .22LR barrel and can be passed right through a Ruger .22 pistol barrel.

I here the same thing from some of my friends.....Some people just don't like cleaning firearms :roll:
 
Don't mind, don't particularly 'like' it either. Glad I changed my tune because as it is right now, I'd spend way too much of my time doing such a tedious, unnecessary procedure. I'm shooting at least a few times a week, sometimes every day. If I 'had' to clean every time I shot, I'd do a lot less shooting.
 
I'm lucky to shoot once or twice a month during the "cold season." I'm sure my cleaning habits would be significantly reduced if I shot a few times a week.
