Blackhawk single action...how much cylinder play is normal? I am familiar with the precision of Freedom Arms, which I do not expect. But, is the Blackhawk cylinder play supposed to be loose? If not, do I send to a smith for oversize locking lug fitting?

When checking for "rotational" play make sure you cock the hammer, pull the trigger and lower the hammer and then, with the trigger held back, check for rotational play.

That way you're checking the cylinder in its most important state -- when firing.

Also, you have noted that a Ruger is not a FA. You will need to allow for more "play" in the cylinder. I'd suggest you compare your gun with others like it before you declare it "bad"

yessir, what O2 states above, gotta check any gun , the proper way, and most of the time any wobble, wiggle is very opinionated, some want rock solid, some want a bit of movement, but NOT sloppy, big difference..............its only a problem when you start to get spitting, excessive blow by, or constant misfires.......or you start to lose accuracy........

rugerguy you reminded me... Another thing I check is how good the cylinder's "carry up" (is that the correct term? It's been awhile...) is by placing a finger against the cylinder and applying a little pressure so there's a small amount of drag as it rotates. Then cocking the hammer to assure that the cylinder rotates sufficiently to lock into place -- even with the drag.

I've seen those Rugers you speak of, don't own any though. My 44 mags and 44 specials lock up tight as a tick and the chamber almost drags. Lucky I guess.
