Wait, what? "A Connecticut woman mistakenly lit a (quarter) stick of dynamite instead of a candle during a power outage and suffered severe injuries Thursday night, police said."

As Peter Grant observes at the second link, how the luckless resident managed to mistake dynamite for candles might be the least of the questions needing to be answered . . . Wow.

Seriously? Dynamite requires a cap & a fuse be attached. Electrical caps & detonation devices are the norm nowadays but a cap & fuse could be used... This sound pretty fishy to me.

Article I read said 1/4 stick. I'm thinking back in the day those looked like a big firecracker.

the article I read said they were in the basement when she bought the house...I assume she didn't know what she had, and the pic didn't look like any quarter stick I ever saw, but it would have been many decades since I was around explosives.

Sounds like she had a blast...

Sounds like Looney Toons. Must of been Wily Coyote's old house. Did the label on the candle say "Acme"?

No the dynamite just had XXX on it. The anvil, and safe, were both from Acme, as well as every other heavy object in the house.

Good one! :D

The article and the commentary link provide enough to make you shake
your head.

The initial article seems a tad ( ) of UNDER reporting.
Far too many facts not included.

I knew this guy once that had about 80 acres of land. He had a powder license and used dynamite occasionally to clear rocks on his land. Well anyway, he took off and left for greener pastures and his wife still had the property. I went over there two years later to borrow something I knew she had and she was looking around in a storage building for it and looked in a dusty old paper bag and said "OH CRAP". In the bag was about four sticks of dynamite. She said she didn't know he still had any of that stuff around. She couldn't find what I wanted and I left, not knowing what she did with the bag of dynamite.

But as someone else said, who would leave a stick of dynamite around with a cap and fuse on it? Anybody with any brains knows you don't cap a stick of dynamite until you are on site and setting the charge. If you're really smart, you don't even store dynamite and caps in the same vicinity.

I think this story is bogus. Something may have exploded but I doubt very much if it was dynamite.

The woman was taken to the hospital with “extreme injuries” to her hands, and she might lose fingers. She also suffered serious facial injuries, police said. The explosion did not injure anyone else.

Well, she is very fortunate that she kept any fingers at all. And "serious facial injuries" makes me wonder if she will lose her eyes. That was a major screw-up, by any measure.

What ever happened to that guy that used to climb into a wooden box with dynamite and blow himself up ? If I remember correctly, he did this as a paid entertainer.

Did he finally climb into one box too many?
