O K I admit to being a dummy but having missed out on a couple of 9mm cylinders for my new model blackhawk, just how do I go about determining what 9 cyl will fit in my 357 b/h?

Thanks for not laughing tooo hard!

You need to KNOW ( measure) the existing cylinder that is in your gun now, as to its "over all" length, from end to end.......of course it must be of the same vintage gun, in your case a new Model, so do NOT get an old model one........try and get the new cylinder as near to ,better yet a "tad"?? longer, so you can "fit" it to the gun...if its too short, you';; have other issues, costly "fit/repair" to make it work..............
any doubt or issues, any GOOD gunsmith should be able to help you out in your quest........

I take my existing cylinder out of my gun, take a dial caliper and measure it from stem to stern. From the flats on teeth on the rear ratchet to the flat on the end of the stud on front.

It's always going to be a crap shoot as to whether you get a drop in fit or not. You may have the right measurement and then have a barrel that is screwed in an extra thread and it still won't fit. I went through three tries on one particular gun before getting a useable cylinder. Admittedly I didn't have a measurement on the first one and was mislead on the second.

I just got a .45acp cylinder that dropped right in.

Get your measurement and put a "wanted" ad in the classifieds, odds are someone will come through. Good luck.
