How Deep Do You Dig on This Forum?

With the Classifieds section holding onto 779 pages (of bandwidth) and most pictures are not active anymore anyway, I query how "deep" do you dig in the classifieds anyway?

I opine the old "selling prices as a reference" answer as folly, as this is not the only web site or forum used to garner a selling value, even when someone asks about value or selling price, most answers advise some other site; and no one would agree that old pre-election prices are anywhere near relevant these days...

I guess I'm suggesting ten pages or so of free classifieds and dump the rest saving bandwidth and operation/maintenance costs.

779 does seem a bit excessive but 10 pages seems to be cutting it a bit short. What about saving just a month---when it runs past 30 days it disappears.

Quite a few other gun forums do just that, disappearing ads after two weeks or so.

Actually, I do use the Classified archives often. It would be sad to see it all go without filtering what is actually removed. I wish we could delete our own posts. I know very well I have threads that have no continuing relevance.

Another idea would be dumping the thousands of cut-and-paste news articles and links that are multiplying daily.

Good luck. Sometime back I suggested that the classifieds be shortened up and was politely told it wasn't going to happen. It seems that whenever a suggestion is presented to reduce unnecessary posts or information it is ignored.

If you go to page 779 it is dating back to 2011.
If I could use that as a reference guide for buying guns now, please point me to the sellers that would be willing to sell at those prices.
Otherwise it seems like a very good idea, but I have no say nor does it matter what I think :)

The Classifieds is not just about current values. At times when I'm researching a variation, I may find useful information in the Classified area.

I've never used the classifieds as a reference. There have been plenty of times where I've seen closed sales where the price was edited out and I've wondered what it sold for. But usually it's more a curiosity and never on an old listing. 100 pages would probably be much more than we need. (I say this knowing doing so would deleted some of my own items that still haven't sold. lol I have things on other forums that I give a yearly "bump" to. They're just unusual items that aren't in great demand.)


Of course you're well aware of my feelings of "the wheat from the chaff" in the classifieds, with our actual contributing members posts being buried beneath countless sales items by people, dealers or otherwise, who are here for no other reason than to use us as a marketplace and save Gunbroker fees.

So how much does "bandwidth" cost? Once this or any other site is set up, just how significant is the cost of bandwidth?
Does a very small site cost less than a huge site? I have been a member here, colt, Smith & Wesson (before I got banned) and levergunner. On the S&W site they are huge on advertising and patriotic members plead for others to "donate" yet this site and levergunner doesn't bother with advertisers nor have fans beg for them. That's why I like this site plus here the site owner doesn't get a heart attack when things might get a little controversial. I think I pointed something like that out on the smith site before I got banned. I understand every time someone clicks on a ad the site owner gets a couple cents. It was evident to me that's why the ape does not allow politics at a certain site. Scared a politically correct advertiser might not like it. Hope this gets back to him.

I think 10 pages are a pretty short amount of time. I know guys on here that easily go that long and many times longer to let their post breathe. Any way you cut it, there is going to be a compromise. I'd think 60 days is about the maximum they need to be kept. Later on we all may decide to cut that back or not. I don't see a problem with cutting things back incrementally to start as an experiment. 60 days are probably closer to 12-15 pages so I think we are getting close to something workable.

In the "classified" description it specifically states that posts expire after 30 days. Seems that would be a good 'cutoff' line, practice what is specifically posted.

Pick a number . . . . as long as it is less than one year.

Then look again in a month or two and see if half that would work.

Repeat until a good number is found. :D

Not Classifieds related, but in answer to the title question -- I've wanted to dig deep on the Hunting and Concealed Carry sections, but they have next to no history available. Is there a reason that old posts in those sections get dumped?

I never go past page one either. But deleting old posts isn’t a band width issue, it’s a storage issue. And pretty minor at that. Text is very small and all the images are hosted elsewhere.

If I ever get the search function to work, I'm gonna run out and buy a lottery ticket. Most of the time, it's "Sorry, you can't use the search function at this time". Once in a while, it will let me use it, but it will return umpteen pages containing all sorts of stuff unrelated to the search terms. May as well just "dig deep" on the particular section.... but after 4 or 5 pages, I give up.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Since any bandwidth or server space we use is coming out of someone else's pocket, you could say any bandwidth use is a problem.


The internet isn't free, someone is paying for everything. We could switch to a "free" system, like ProBoards (which isn't free, they have their own ads) but we couldn't have a classifieds where guns are sold. As many of you know, THIS is the place to put guns up for sale and link them to ProBoards based sites. lol)

As I've said elsewhere, I don't think the money would be the issue, plenty of other forums stay running in various ways. Dealing with the money is the issue.

I am computer illiterate. I never tried to learn one until I retired as I didn't want to work the radio room at work. It seems most sites allow advertisers on their web sites to make money I suppose to pay expenses and maybe as income? Sometimes I watch one person web videos (usually to do with flying) and they sort of solicit a thumbs up thing as I suppose its to get brownie points to attract advertisers? Years ago I was a member of a ATV club. At a meeting a outsider came and offered to handle the club web site for free. I asked him why? He frankly said he would get a few cents every time someone clicked on a ad. After that meeting I figured out why the person that ran a certain gun site I mentioned on a prior post was so paranoid about members hinting of anything political. Dont want to pizz off possible advertisers. I don't know what to believe. I have asked before and never got a answer. Does it cost anything at all or a significant amount to run a site or not? I would like to know as I don't want to be a freeloader on sites I like but on OTHER sites I notice there is always some "fans" or "shills" more or less try to shame others into donations etc to keep the site running. Also I see they have "moderators". Is this a labor of love or does the site owner pay them? Is it a labor of love or is there money there? Wish someone in the know would give a answer for once. It just might change my suspicions and opinions. Not, on THIS site but some others. That's why I like this site. And cant respect a few others.
