Due to a power outage here in Memphis we had to discard some meat. Fortunately, I had just emptied my shop trash can, which reeks of Hoppe's No. 9 in our garbage collection cart. Great air freshener!

There are plenty of gun cleaning solvents that have little, if any odor. I happen to prefer Gunzilla because of that and also because it is a one step cleaner, while Hoppe's is not. As others have mentioned, I'm surprised you could smell the Hoppe's if you last step was running an lightly oiled patch through the bore and then giving the gun a overall wipe down.

Hoppes is now made in China. About five years ago I bought some of the elite version of Hoppes degreaser at Walmart. It stated on the label that it was non-toxic, however, I developed aural migraines that affected my vision (like after looking at a bright red light). There some type of poisonous petro chemical in that product is very poisonous.

Stick with reputable brands that are made in the USA UK or the European countries. There are some excellent done cleaning products overseas in Europe.

Sorry for your bad reaction to Hoppe's Elite (degreaser?) but I have used the 'gun cleaner' for many years and like M-Pro 7 there are no petroleum distillates in there. There are virtually no fumes. It is water based and has cleaning agents, corrosion inhibitors, surfactants and a lubricant in a non-toxic solvent base. You must be allergic to one of the ingredients like I am allergic to epoxy glue.

Hoppe's Elite and M-Pro 7 require a different cleaning technique to get your guns clean and condition the bore and chambers but the stuff does work if you use it right and without the fumes and odor.

I love the smell of Hoppe's #9, but if I am just doing I quick cleaning after firing only a few rounds I just use Ballistol, even though I hate the smell of it. But I like that it is a cleaner and lubricant instead of a solvent so I spray it down the barrel and all over the gun, inside and out, and then wipe it all down as well as run a dry patch through the barrel. I usually don't even use oil if I have used the Ballistol.

I have a sticker on my safe that says "I love the smell of Hoppes #9 in the morning". A friend gave me some Hoppes #9 air fresheners for my truck a while back, but the fragrance is no longer.
