"Hondo" trivia............

The old movie "Hondo", starring John Wayne, was on last night, and we watched it for the hundredth time, or so.

I Googled some information about that movie. Of interest:

The dog, Sam, was the original movie "Lassie."

John Wayne won the dog from its owner/trainer in a poker game on the set.

The filming locations were Mexico, near Patagonia, Ariz., and in Utah.

John Wayne had only intended to direct the movie, and star Glen Ford in the role.

Leonard Nimoy is an Apache in one of the closing scenes.


Now you know.

Interesting trivia there. The Duke's Colt that he carried in Hondo is on display at the NRA Museum in Springfield,MO. Saw it a few months ago.

I noticed that it had wood (walnut?) grips instead of the usual Catalin.

"Spock" played in several western series, I see him in Gunsmoke and Laramie. "Matt Dillion" was also in this classic. A good dog is always a star.

The movie was based on L'Amour's short story "The Gift of Cochise" as he had not yet had a novel published. He wrote the book "Hondo" based on the movie and John Wayne's endorsement was printed on the cover. The rest is history.

Hondo came out in '53. I was born in late '54, my parents first child and my mom kept a detailed journal of my early days in my "baby book." Several years ago I was reading it and discovered that Hondo was my first ever theater movie. I was much too young to remember seeing it. Perhaps this explains my life long love of The Duke and Westerns in general.

I had to wear those glasses the first time I saw the movie. Many scenes were filmed to take advantage of the 3D effect. Many shots had falling Indians roll "right into your lap" and spears and arrows shot at the audience.

I think one of the best pictures of John Wayne and the west is this picture, which I presume was a promotional photo of the move.
I actually have it printed out in poster size on the door to my office.

Hondo's wanted poster is hanging on the wall of the sheriff's office in Rio Lobo.

The names Mrs. Lowe and Lane turn up again in another Wayne movie, The Train Robbers.

We rented it from Amazon or Netflix & let the kids watch it. My Father-in-law brought a Louis L'Amour short story collection by & left it at the house. My younger daughter loved it. When I found out she liked his stuff I dug around in the attic & brought her a milk crate full of paperbacks. She was ecstatic. I honestly believe she liked the book better than the movie. Everyone in the family seemed to enjoy watching it though.

what a knowledgeable crowd here. I too loved the swimming lesson part. And I loved the speech therapy in Cowboys. A lot of good values on display in those movies. Anyone remember which movie had him burn down his own house when spurned (vs spurred) by the object of his affection? Might have been some whiskey involved too.
