Home Depot of Lowe's?

For some reason we have a Home Depot across the highway from a Lowe's home improvement store. Is this a common practice for these two competitors? btw the Home Depot was there first. I prefer shopping at Home Depot only because they seem to cater to contractors more and I just always went there. Now that I'm retired I'm starting to see that Lowe's caters more to the home owner and home decorators. What do you think? Who's card do you have? :D :D

we have them both here, but nowhere near "across the street from each other..." use them both , but kinda like Lowes better,,,,,,my old boss Nardelli, left GE to head up Home Depot and the first thing he did there was remove all the GE light bulbs,,ha ha He's outta there now too,gee, wonder why :roll:

I prefer Home Depot; just onaccountabecause. It's been that way for several years. There is a Lowes a few miles away. I have seen many competing businesses across the street from each other; drug stores and etc. I refer to that as "in your face" competition. That alone would have me continue to use the one that was there first if I liked them.

I don't have a card from any store except Costco.

Our Home Depot was originally called "Crossroads" and it was here first, opened up in the late 90's or early 00's I think. Our Lowes is right across the highway (east) and has only been here about 6 or 8 years. Now, right across another street (north) is a Menards that's been open about 2 years.

Menards seems to me like a horrible design inside the store, how it's laid out, where stuff is located. I avoid it. Lowes grabbed my business when they first opened but since then they've had management changes and Home Depot sharped up quite a bit.

We have 2 Lowes/Home Depot's and both are right next to each other. I used to hate Lowes because it was always a 30 minute wait in line no matter what. Home Depot moved in. It lit Lowe's azz on fire :lol: Home Depot was instrumental when it came to helping to rebuild my town that was leveled by an F-4 tornado in '11. They really stepped up to the plate! I now use them both. My only nod to Lowes is that I think their stores have a better layout. Price match is a toss up. The exact same item can vary greatly between the 2. I choose the one that had the lower price to begin with.

Lowe's built across the road from Home Depot. I used to prefer Home Depot, just because it was a little easier to reach on my way home from work. Then they put in all self-serve checkouts. I hate them on principle, and they're useless in a hardware store. I started going to Lowe's exclusively. When I did go back to Home Depot, I had a big hangup at the checkout. Got the manager up there, and told him that, because of the self-checkout, I had spent $2000 in the previous year at Lowe's. He just shrugged.

Far as I'm concerned, a toss-up, except for tools. I go to Home Depot for tools. Dislike those rubber handled tools at Loew's.

Also, home Depot has a couple of young girls working there who think I'm really neat! Flattery does go a long way!

We have Home Depot, they started out pretty bad but have gotten to be great. Lowe's contemplated coming in but the stupid idiots that run the city and county fought over who was going to get the tax money and Lowe's said kiss off and went to the next town away. They and Home Depot both do well there, about 3 miles apart. lowe's was looking a property right on the city and county line.

I use Lowes the most. Mainly because it is more convenient for me.
As far as prices goes. I go to the store that has the highest price because they both price match and give a 5 or 10% discount if their price is higher than the other store.
Also don't forget they both will give a 10% military discount.

Home Depot & Lowes aren't right across the street from each other here. They are one exit apart over by the interstate. I usually go to Lowes more but that is mostly because it is easier to get there & back. There are some things one has & the other doesn't though. It seems like the Lowes here has slightly better customer service but it can still be difficult to find someone to help you. It can be pretty frustrating when you know exactly what you need etc. but can't find it or someone to tell you where it is.
To be honest they have built an Ace that is closer to home & if they have what I need I go there as by the time I go to one of the others I've burned whatever money I saved in gas anyway.

We have a Lowes about a block from the Home Depot. I don't carry any cards for either but Home Depot was in here years before Lowes so it's my go to store. I just know where everything is so I don't got to Lowes unless HD doesn't have something I need.

Used to have access to both. I preferred Lowe's. They were about a mile apart. Where I live now, there is only a Lowe's. So thats where I go.

A poster earlier said they didn't like Lowe's tools. I'm not too crazy about them either. But, then, I always get mine at Sears.

However,,, I totally prefer Lowes.
Why?
The 10% military discount.
Yes, I've heard that Home Depot gives it too, but they are MORE RESTRICTIVE locally. All I have is my VA Medical card.
Lowes honors my VA card,,, but Home Depot doesn't!

I shop at Lowes almost exclusively.

Plus,,, I have found that Lowes has a few "deals" that I've never heard of HD offering.
One, if they have lumber or other materials that is not up to grade or sellable at normal pricing, they bundle a lot of odd stuff together & offer it for sale "as is!" Cheap too! I have paid .10 on the dollar for materials.
Next, if you have an order for materials costing $1500 or more, give them a list, and give them a few hours & they will work up a "best price" for all of it and then give me 10% off of that for my military discount.
Hard to beat Lowes in my book.

We have both, and I've shopped at both. I usually prefer HD, because it's next to Walmart, and I'm at Walmart at least once a week, so it's more convenient to me. We have 2 Lowes, in other parts of town. If I happen to need something and I'm in one of those parts of town, I have no problem stopping in at Lowes to get it. But if I'm sitting here at home and need something, I'm more likely to head for HD.

I shop at both, and like you Jimbo, we have a Lowes and Home Depot within spittin' distance of each other. Also like your situation, the H.D. was here 1st.

I have cards for both stores, but I never use their credit except for 1 year = Same As Cash offers. I only keep the cards because they allow me 12 months interest-free purchases. Certainly a large consideration for anyone on fixed income. I like using other peoples' money for free! :)

Each store has its advantages... For instance; The sun screen (for windows) at Home Depot is a bit more pricey than the Lowes' selections, but it does a better job of blocking UV/Heat. On the other hand, Home Depot has a better selection of PVC and yard watering stuff.

We have a lot of property, and Mrs. Rugerhound is a plant-a-holic. Lowes maintains a "Distressed Plants" section where they mark down stuff that hasn't been attended to quite as well as it might. We have gotten some terrific deals on plants, shrubs, and even trees. (I have planted 30+ trees on the property since 2009, so whatever we can do to save a few $$$ is a big deal!) ;)

There's no reason to limit one's self... Both have good stuff, and both have some junk! And they both offer 12 months same-as-cash on purchases over 300 bucks typically.

I have been to HD a few times, and they have refused my VA card as proof of military service,,, yet, at Lowes they smile, accept it & many thank me for my prior service. All Lowes requires is proof that you are serving OR that you have served in the past.

Lowes and HD are about 3 miles apart here. I've notice HD being cheaper on a few similar items. Lowes is closer and I go there more than HD. I have a HD card but only used it to get a discount on a power tool set.

We once had Builder's Square in the San Antonio area. The one I went to closed (think they all did) and became a HD.

I think it's only active or retired that usually get discounts.

My local Lowe's honors my DD-214. Most often, they don't wait for me to unfold it when I remove it from my shirt pocket. They just apply the discount as soon as I mention it. Can't say if that's national or just local policy.

I prefer Lowes, but often shop HD just because it's very close to home. Having said that, I've now learned to shop Lowes first for any appliances. Lots of name brands, competitive prices, and fast efficient delivery, warranty repair etc. They are my first contact when I need any kind of appliance.

I do not buy nut, bolts, washers etc. from either one. The bins are a huge mess in both, and the prices are too high. Tractor Supply is where I buy mine now. Nicely arranged bins that are not all mixed together, and they charge by the pound. Just toss them in a bag, and the girl at the register tosses them on a scale, and you pay and get out fast for a lot less money than HD or Lowes.

There is a brand new building going up in Hemet. I wondered what it was going to be every time I drove past it. I got excited when I drove past it last time. It's going to be a "Tractor Supply".

It should be open in another week or two. Can't wait to get in there and see what they have.

Shop HD because it's what we have in town but prefer Lowe's. A Tractor Supply just opened recently, not a lot of stuff I usually need but a nice store.

We have Lowes and Home Despot on the same side of the street, next door to each other.
HD is more popular with small contractors , but I get the feeling that is more due to having a dedicated. Checkout lane , and dedicated person doing their orders than anything else.

Usually go first to Lowes , but prefer local independent old school hardware store to either for little stuff.

I shop at my the locally owned hardware store - Parkers' True Value Hardware. Sam Parker has owned at operated this store for over forty years. His selection isn't as broad, his prices are a tad bit higher, and he doesn't carry lumber and similar items. But for the usual household repairs, tools, small engine repair and down home friendly and personal service, why on earth would I go to one of the box stores?

Home Depot and Lowe's have their place. They just don't have much of my business.
