I am a horseback ride and packer who spends a lot of time in the mountains. I just purchased a redhawk 44 5.5 revolver and a 1894 marlin carbine 44 mag for this purpose.

For years I have carried a glock 27 in a horizontal sholder rig from galco. However i have no faith in the 40 sw and felt it wis to change

Does anyone else here ride horseback and if so what holster seup have you found comfortable?
Ihave been considering a crossdraw like the Galco but have never used one.

Also I would like to hve the holster on a seperate belt with a speedloader and my knife. This way i could simply remove the belt instead of undoing my pants belt

With good setup costing well over a 100 I prefer to buy the right one the first time

I'm not a horseback rider either, but I have a 5.5" Redhawk. I actually looked for the gun for a number of years before stumbling on a smooth but tight Redhawk. The bugaboo with this gun is weight. It's an anchor. I haven't yet solved that problem. Rob at Simply Rugged has a neat looking chest/harness system. Maybe a traditional Western gun/holster belt would work, too. In my view, it's too dang heavy to wear without some kind of suspension system. (Stout suspenders on a conventional belt/holster may work as well.)

Please let us know how you resolve this issue.

How about a Simply Rugged, Chesty Puller? It keeps the gun up, and out of the way, but instantly available.

+1 ~ I've heard nothing but good things about all their products.

I have the Galco crossdraw for my 5.5" 44 Redhawk. As with all Galco stuff, it is superior. Fits close to my side when riding a tractor or ATV- out of the way but accessable and securely holding the gun.

I am facinated by the Simply Rugged holsters as well and would like to own one some day. Everyone on here who has one seems to have nothing but good things to say about them.

Another vote for the Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake w/ or w/o the Chesty Puller System. Pretty much made for what you want to do and more. The holster can be worn strong side or cross-draw on a belt. With the Chesty Puller you can wear the gun under your arm or center of your body. The holster doesn't require any retention straps. The only way the gun comes out is if you pull it out. I carry a .454 Alaskan in mine and it works well. Very flexible and comfortable rig. If you prefer a different holster the Chesty Puller System will work with just about any pancake and they have adapters for conventional holsters. www.simplyrugged.com

I too spend a lot of time on horseback. Your idea of having the gun on a seperate belt works great, 'specially at pit stops. I would avoid anything that holds the gun up near or on your rib cage in case of an accident, ribs are vulnerable enough as it is.

I have a Bianchi belt holster that holds the gun on a forward cant of about 15 degrees. It works great for everything but being in the saddle where the muzzle rubs the cantle and tries to push it too far forward. +1 for vertical holsters.

I use an Uncles Mikes cordura belt holster now, but there is a Simply Rugged Sourdough Flapjack in my near future.

One other thing. When I carried a .357 I found Bianchi's Speed Strips much more adventageous than speed loaders. They're flat so they carry much better in a pocket or on a belt. They also allow loading a partial cylinder or even a single shell. I now carry a .44 SA but wouldn't even consider speed loaders for a DA. Tuff Products makes a strip similar to Bianchi's but available in many more calibers.

Well its looking like a galco dao, pretty sure that simply rugged holster is gonna ride a little high and tight for all day in the saddle.

I would like to know which model of bianchi holster and belt you were using tho. Good to know about the speedloaders as that was my next thing to look for

timruger1, if you're refering to the Bianchi I mentioned that does not work well, it's a Ranger model for a 4 5/8" BH.

You may be right about the sourdough being too high and tight. I just found a guy, Idaho Leather Co., that makes a cordura flap holster for revolvers. Do a search for "cordura flap holster" on Gun Broker for more info and a picture if that sounds interesting.

I carry my Redhawk in a Hunter 1100; it's rugged and secure, and inexpensive enough that I don't cringe when it gets scratched in the brush...

Now that looks like a much better deal than the $239.00 rig

I like a good quality holster, but $239.00 is a little out of my price range.

And you can put it on and off your belt simply by unsnapping the strap around the front, which secures the belt loop.

I've been using Hunters for years without any issues.
