Hodgdon Ruger only data???

I had this thread on the revolver forum but evidently there are no handloaders there.

I sent this e-mail today.

Friends at Hodgdon,
I was looking through the load data on your site for the .45 Colt Ruger Only Data.

Under the 300 gr.SPR JFP bullet data using H110 it shows....

21.8 gr. H110 @ 1191 FPS and 26,700 cup starting load and...

22.2 gr. H110 @ 1198 FPS. And 30,100 cup as max. Load

Can this be right??? .4 gr. Powder only gains 7 FPS. While increasing pressure by 3,400 cup ???

Can this be right?

Interesting. I would like to see a more through investigation of this phenomenon. I have heard/noticed that as you approach Max pressure with most loads that velocity increases become very small. That is one of the ways you know you are near Max pressure. That particular case is very extreme.

Not a good trade-off for sure.
At best, it's a "why bother" situation. At worst, it seems to be flirting with disaster.

Hi,

I don't have the testing equipment to know if it's "right" but have enough experience to know it's certainly "possible."

However, I've maintained a certain "skepticism" about many of Hodgdon's recipes over the years, and generally only load ones I find duplicated elsewhere by reputable sources (as opposed to simply copying and pasting 'em.") This example is one of the reasons I've taken that approach.

H110/296 is odd powder, that's for sure. My buddy and I saw that first hand using 44 mag. He trickles everything and loads to +- .0 grain.

In his S&W 8" Model 29, the load range is listed as 18 to 19 grains with the Hornady 300 grain XTP. 18 to 18.5 grains yielded a corresponding increase in velocity, but 18.5 to 19 grains, the velocity went down, and primers started to flatten at 19 grains. In my 4" Redhawk, every .1 grain increase we saw a increase of velocity all the way to 19 grains with no flattening.


I still like Lil'gun best for my magnum loads.

I'm guessing they dropped the information because you can now get a 45 Colt small frame Blackhawk that cannot survive such heavy loads for an extended length of time.

Also, call Speer. They will likely email you the relevant page from their current manual.

I have Speer #14 and it shows the 300 gr UCSP using 20.7 to 21.0 gr W296 with a 110 fps difference and 21.1 to 23.5 gr H110 with a 180 fps difference.

The Speer 300 gr. bullet is .451 dia. while the Hornady 300 gr. XTP is .452 .
This gun don`t seem to like .451`s , at least not in 250 gr.,the ones I have tested so far.
The load data is from the 2013 Hodgdon annual manual, Ruger Only data section.

18.0 - 1577 fps - 25,800 CUP <======== This is where I think there is a typo.

I'm looking at 18 grains of Lil Gun at 26k CUP and I don't think that looks right??? :shock:
