You think feral pigs are a problem? In Columbia, some 50 hippos are roaming free, descendents of 4 that Pablo Escobar brought in 30 years ago for his private zoo. With no natural predators, the population is growing. Perhaps the Columbian government could be persuaded that the income from hunters would be a nice addition to the national coffers.

It seems that The BBC put out a story in conjunction with this that hippo is inedible, which is incorrect.

They would make an easy target. Where's the challenge? Use a 50 bmg from 1000 yards? And then I don't know about being edible but where do you find a big enough oven?

I bet Hippo Ham would be great smoked!
Better start working on a recipe.

Did you know that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal. Besides smelling really bad, I'm going by the hippo house at the zoo, they are nasty sob's.

Yeah I would question the edible part. True. Everything is edible but taste and quality are another thing all together. Rats are edible for that matter. Cock roaches even.

I saw that program on the BBC.

I saw a Youtube of a Hippo at a Zoo taking a dump; it appeared very "runny" and was well spread by a rapid SPINNING of the tail, it must have covered about a 12 foot area.

Most people would cut them up first - kind of like you do with a cow.

I guess I had envisoned something like a whole hog roast. Sort of a Hawaiian Luau?

Yeah, well that would take a REALLY big motor to turn it - something on the order of a 350 CI Chevy V8 I suspect.....

Merle Now your talking. Who's going to dig the pit though? I can just see a bunch of (well Southern* Red Necks came to mind) guys out with shovels and a big dead hippo off to the side. One turns to the others and say "Hurry up, Cleatus, I'm a hungrier than a hippo."

Sorry, I was waiting at home all day for a new dishwasher to show up. So more than a little bored.

*Note: Don't get riled up, I didn't specify a particular state. Southern could be South Africa too. :D :D :D

Forget the shovels - bring out the backhoe!

Hippos are actually related to horses. Find a good recipe for horse meat, and you're in the game. Think of a hippo as a reaaaaalllllyyyy fat horse with a big mouth, crooked teeth and a bad attitude. :P :P :P :P
