High School Detention

right before Spring Break my daughter had a lot of stuff due all at once. Plus one of her classes, “History of Music” was going to an Opera on a Tuesday night which ran until around 11pm.

She had this English paper to write as well. So she wanted to stay home from school to write this paper. Well, she goes to a Catholic high school. That particular day she missed they had mass.

She got detention because of it. Now the funny part is, she also totally bombed the English paper she wrote. Her teacher told her, and now we laugh at this: her teacher told her: “I applaud your attempt.”

So detention for a terrible paper. I’m not mad only because her GPA is 3.999. Even with that paper…

I told her we will have to watch Breakfast Club before she goes to detention. 😀

Long ago, at my High School...We all referred to it as the "Rubber Room." After school suspension...
His name was Mr. Thrash (not joking.) A WWII Marine Pacific War veteran, he was our supervisor.
To call it an interesting, and most definitely, enlightening experience, would be an understatement. 💪🤪

Actually, Saturday morning suspension, featuring a Mrs. Karen (appropriately named!) Kramer, was a far more dreaded and unappreciated experience...😒👎

You know the Breakfast Club movie is about Saturday Detention.

I only got detention once. After school one day, I walked across the grass to get to my car. One teacher didn’t like me taking the short cut. Only he watched and waited until I was half way and tried calling me back. I waved him off and kept going. He didn’t appreciate my response I guess.

It’s funny what we remember. Because he was my teacher, for social studies, and that’s what I remember more than him teaching. He must not have been good.

My daughter’s English teacher is the same. She loves English and wants to study it in college. But she can’t stand this teacher.

Sounds like she is developing a bad work ethnic. I'd make sure it doesn't get worse.

Kevin, you suggested 'The Breakfast Club' for her to watch.... man, you are one brave parent.

Closest I ever came to detention was my first year of college I had to "walk a tour," How many of you know what that is?
Of course the real punishment back then where I was with the group punishments (hazings).... midnight shower parties.....

Didn't have 'detention' in my high school. Coach had a 3' long plywood paddle with holes in it so air resistance didn't slow it down. I was threatened with it's application ONCE. Told tough guy coach he was welcome to try. He chose not to. The 'infraction'? I'd just sent two boys to the hospital after they and I had a bit of a dispute.

A friend of ours has a son in junior high. He has a class with several girls who wear cat ears and tails and hiss at people every day. One of them hissed at him as she walked by and he barked at her. He got detention. Nothing is ever done to the girls. Public school.

Anyone who served in the military or attended military school/rotc/etc...will know that.....not a bad punishment depending on the UOTD and weather.

Hazings, a naughty word today thanks to, well, lets not get this political but Hegseth is set on getting back some traditions/ceremonies phased out by *** ****. Be good to get some hazing back.

Only time I was in detention was Jr High and it was after school. Just had to clean chalk boards, erasers, take out trash and then sit quietly at a desk with no movement until dismissed. Don't recall what I did.

In High School, not really detention....but I was late to football and lacrosse practice a few times. Had to stay after and run hills once, and when a group of us where late we had to stay after and run the golf course across the street. That was brutal.

I went to a Catholic elementary and high school. Never had detention BUT, did get to visit Sister Superior a few times in high school. One such visit I remember vividly. It was the day the school was called to tell them that I had been selected as the Maryland CAP Cadet for the International Exchange. VERY interesting conversation that day. That particular day I and a friend had left at lunch to watch the Naval Academy Midshipmen practice lacrosse (about a three block walk) and since we both had library the first period after lunch, and no one checked who was or wasn't there, decided to stay a little longer while they practiced. The best laid plans of mice and men. That was the one day they went looking for me, and I wasn't there.

Got that beat, but it wasn't me. Our vice principal was a sadistic "individual". He over used physical punishment. But he did get his comeuppance.

My junior year he decided to give one of the guys swats. The fellow told him he wouldn't stand for it. They had a couple of "coaches" the guy and the beating was administered.

The VP was highly shocked when he was arrested later that day. You really ignore the refusal of an 18 yo.

Never got detention, BUT....

12 days left in my senior year. There was a two hour all senior class chance to see what was created in the art classes in a show. The night before was the art show for parents and the community. My buddy and I volunteered to be there and help out all night. Therefore during the school show we figured we'd skip out since we'd seen it all the night before. As we were heading back (on time) the lot officer saw us and started chasing after us. We had made it into the school and could easily have blended in and never got caught. The guy I was with was one of those that lived in the principals office so I took his lead since "the principal never does anything" and let him catch us. Well apparently the principal needed to show his power. We both got 7 day suspension of our last 12. I can't say it was good or bad, but it was boring and I'd rather have screwed off with my friends to end the journey.

Those are some funny stories. There is a nun at my daughter's school. But she isn't mean at all. On Halloween, she takes them on a ghost tour of the school. They have fun. She's a sophmore, so only two more summers to go, which makes my wife sad. She doesn't want to stay in Texas for college, says it too hot.

Get him some dog ears and a tail. Tell him to keep barking at them...
🤷😹😹😹🥳

With all of the controversy going on in the Katlick faith, I can't believe that any teacher would have the guts to do stuff like this.

In my High School we had a special "father", who was the "Dean of Discipline". He was a holier-than-thou fire and brimstone SOB. In recent years when the lawsuits were publicized, he was one of the worst confirmed pedophiles on the list.

Our diocese is bankrupt now. They are closing parishes left and right. NOT the ones with the smallest members, but the ones that have the best property values. It's obvious why the members are leaving the church.

I truly believe I received good values and education with 12 years of parochial schools, but my sister went to public school, and she turned out just as good.

3.999 is very impressive! Fox network had just started broadcasting in the Waco area in 1988 so Married With Children was a hit with me. When I was always called into detention the vice principal just took one look and would say: "You again, miss Bundy?". :)

I only got detention once. I didn't bother to go and there were no repercussions.

I don't think that after school detention is legal. The school holds sway over your life from first bell to last bell (8 AM to 3 PM at my high school). Forcing you to stay after that is either illegal imprisonment or custodial interference.

They must be “Furies” kids who act like animals . One of the high schools around us put large cat boxes in the bathrooms for them.

I remember them
Here are a couple that warmed a few backsides. These were my father-in-laws. He was principal at a Baptist school.

I once got 3 licks with a paddle for kissing my wife, and we were married! She took detention.

Maybe he should lift his leg at them next time!

I got detention in metal shop class for leaving a hot piece of metal next to the sink because someone else was using it to cool what they'd welded. I shouldn't have left it unattended and shop teacher grabbed it & burned his fingers. During detention I was using a Bridgeport milling machine when I needed to use the bathroom. I turned the rotation off on the milling machine but forgot to turn the travel off before going to bathroom. When I came back everybody was standing around the miller that had gauged it's way through the steel. That shop teacher hated me and my younger brother for being related to me.

Yeah, we never had "detention." In my day, you either got a whipping or you got suspended. Or, if you were really special (as was I on occasion), you got expelled.

I joined the Marine Corps after my Junior year of high school (1976). The high school principle didn't like me.

There's rumors someone fitting my description launched several bottle rockets toward his home.

A couple of my high school buddies said the principle harassed them while I was in Marine Corps bootcamp.

The principle was nice to me when I went to visit one of my teachers(a fellow Marine who was one of my motivations to join the Marine Corps and see the world) after I graduated boot camp.

One of my high school buddies is still one of my best friends. He was such a low key guy and I was the opposite. He wasn't as innocent as some people thought...:) Good memories. Good times..:)

In grade school we got smacked with a ruler except one male teacher in 6th grade hit me in the back of my neck with his open hand so hard it knocked me to the floor from my desk chair, just because I talked while taking a test. In high school it was 3 cracks with a paddle and I got plenty. Either cursing out a teacher or skipping school or smoking in the bathroom. Hell once I even cursed out the principle right after he paddled me. To this day I feel school was like going to work and not getting paid. Other then learning how to read in grade school nothing really helped me get through my years of making a living. I learned more out in public then I ever learned in any classroom. But my dad told me I needed that HS diploma to get a job. That job was the steel mill and it lasted about 2 years. I left there to work construction and never looked back. Had I been able to work those other 9 months instead of going to school I may have been able to retire earlier.
