Deciding that we wanted breakfast for supper last night and were running low on eggs as well as a few other things we headed to Walmart yesterday afternoon......eggs were $7.27 per dozen !!

Bought plenty of grain tho! At the end of the growing season they
get whats left over from the garden.

Yep, we saw the same thing shopping at our local Walmart Saturday morning. No idea what’s causing such a steep price hike.

I try to only buy the free range eggs, just seem to taste better. Guess I am making a trip down the street to our local egg pusher for a dozen or two.
I wonder if a silver dime will buy a loaf of bread or a dozen eggs after the economy collapses.

I have seen them close to $8 doz. here and Mississippi has a lot of chicken farms.

When I bought my place 20+ years ago, 10 hens and a rooster were included with the deal. It was summer time and they barely touch their store bought food. I was getting $3 a dozen from neighbors. I quickly learned that they eat LOTS of store bought food all winter long. They have 2 acres to feed them selves but it is slim pickings in the winter. A 50lb bag of layer pellets cost $8 back then. Now just over 20 years and that same 50lb bag of pellets cost $18. I get $4 a dozen and never need to run to the store for breakfast fixings. At one time I kept receipts and did the math. I used to make decent money in the summer when they ate outside, and would break even when they dined in on store bought food. Now days it is break even in the summer and loose a few bucks in the winter. So at $4 per dozen it is a push. But keep in mind, my girls are totally real free ranging and always happy. I am also told our eggs are far superior to store bought eggs.

I also do some local bartering with eggs. I haven't paid for garbage service in over 20 years. A dozen eggs here and there, and a pair of neighbors have no problem with me topping off their garbage and recycle cans every week.

The cartoon above makes me laugh. New neighbors---fresh to country living had to have their own chickens. $1200 and lots of labor later they have a really nice hen house with automatic feeders, waters, and door. 10 chicks at $4-7 each, then 6 months of feeding them the high dollar chick food, I got a picture last week of their first egg. I didn't have the heart to tell them that they will never recoup their $1200 and hard labor, even if they have laying hens for 50 years.

I live in a beach area, but it’s unincorporated. One advantage is that folks can legally own chickens. My neighbor has quite e a few. More eggs than she can eat. She’s also widowed and slightly disabled. She gives eggs away daily. She also barters them for things like gardening and small household repairs.

We haven’t bought eggs in decades but maybe I. Eed to tell her what her eggs go for these days.

So you noticed. I usually buy the "fake eggs" as I call them. They come in a vertical quart container. I too was surprised they had also gone up in price of over $7 bucks ea. Just got an increase in in SS benefits checks and with the high prices of things, it is all but gone!

Shopped eggs at the local Winn Dixie the other day; Jumbo's were over $8.00Doz and the large werent much cheaper. Ended up buying a dozen brown locally grown cage free eggs for a bit over $5.00/doz; They are quite tasty !

We buy the brown eggs, usually the “Happy” brand eggs, or the organic eggs, but I don’t remember them being that much. In fact just last week I bought two dozen, I think they were $6.50 each.

Which I guess after typing that it is a lot isn’t it?

But heck, most everything at the grocery store, well, lots of items are in the $5 to $6 price range.

I get mine locally, $2 a dozen. Better than store bought. Wife was wanting to get a few chickens, I told her for no more eggs than we eat I will just buy them.

I just checked the price of 18 XL eggs at Walmart. I bought some on the 4th for $8.07. Today they were $7.37.

Round here they are getting pert near $4.00 a dozen. I can understand disease and such so I suck it up. Funny, 18 months ago I was paying $2.50 for 2&1/2 dozen.
I have raised egg layers and meat birds but when scratch feed and laying pellets went up I quit. Not cost effective fer sure even though so much better. Damn sure cain't free range them cause of house dogs, hawks, coyotes and raccoons.

Walmart no longer has lowest prices. 2 years ago I paid $2.25 for a 5 dozen box of Large eggs. That same box is $23.00 as of yesterday. Sunday I paid $5.69 for a 3 dozen pack at Harris Teeter.

Actually, eggs can last a really long time. Sitting on the counter unrefrigerated...I can't remember what has to happen.

Sucks the choice has been taken away from the citizens. However, I do believe the US food quality can be improved. The free range part would love to see how they define that. If it's just access to a 1x1 fenced-in yard....defeats the purpose and is just political theater.


I buy my eggs locally from the farmer where I get my beef. If not, Sam's Club offers a good deal organic over their regular eggs.

This thread caught my eye because just yesterday I remarked to my wife that the high cost of eggs really surprised me. I was at our regular grocery store and a dozen "jumbo" eggs was almost $6, which seemed incredibly expensive to me. But I guess some parts of the country have it a lot worse.

What we are seeing now in America is in part the result of Joe Biden's total ineptness and surrender to the Radical Left of his party, and the beginning of the end of America as we have known it. Americans need to look at Argentina to understand that we are well on our way down the same path that they took. At the beginning of the 20th century Argentina was one of the world's richest countries. Then "progressive" type politics came into power with the government more and more involved in the economic life of that nation and pandering more and more to "populist" issues. Taxes kept increasing, and their national debt became unmanageable. Now Argentina is an economic basketcase with little hope for a prosperous future. We are in the early stages of the same type of collapse. But the people who vote Democrat over and over because they stupidly think that the most important issues are unlimited abortion rights, government mandating of weird pronouns for the mentally ill gender dysphoric, and fighting non-existent "White supremacy" will ensure that America keeps on the path of swirling down the drain of the toilet we have put ourselves in with 32 trillion dollars in debt.
