Progress on these airborne fiber laser systems is moving rapidly. The article below is a good read, however, I think they would be more suitable for larger aircraft (bombers, AC-130, etc.) as defense against SAM's or taking out point targets on the ground, rather than on small fighters, since you wouldn't be as limited in power.
