Hand Weapons.

As some of you know, I am an ex-fighter with most of my life in martial arts and experiencing anything from trophy fighting to pit/warehouse/parking lot/ whatever, along with bouncing and personal security. Great, but got hit with Long Covid in 2020 when no treatment existed. Didn't just wipe out a year of my life, but left my body a shambles for awhile. for awhile. Re-took up firearms, but am fully trained in other weapons. Long, medium, and short staff ( for some, Hanbo. Jo. and Bo). I trained to fight with them- not twirl prettily, or do contest katas. I have also trained with knives- realistic- not some guy politely holding a knife out front for some technique- Throwers of all sorts, batons, etc. All in stress / street situations Below are a few pics- minus staffs and canes- of current hand weapons. Lower right is a covert stick / dual knife and in the holster an ASP batons. The big "stars" are actually folders that clip on the belt. The little ones do not have the "nubs" of practice shuriken that prevent deep penetration.
I also have stun gun/ pens, Mace, pepper spray, a sap, a monkey paw, Manrike ( weighted chain). My question? Yes this is a gun forum, but who here has practiced with hand weapons as well?

My husband has done martial arts since elementary school doing: Hapkido, Escrima, Tai Chi and Krav Maga. He still does all but Tai Chi he likes for the health benefits and got into the use of the sword/saber and the three section staff was his favorite, great workout when get them going. He also likes the san setsu kon the three staff version of nunchakus.

He is way more coordinated than me. I managed to hurt myself every time with both Nunchakus and San Setsu Kon- painfully... :eek:

I haven't been in a fight since 6th grade..... !!! Never was 'inclined' since then.

As a kid, and always one of the smallest in the crowd, I had a few street fights. My experience was not uncommon on the streets of Brooklyn, NY in the early 1950's. I won a few, lost a few, and mainly prevailed because rather than the initial pushing back and forth common in these encounters I would throw a punch right to the face of my opponent which usually ended the fight immediately. But other than an incident while I was in college where a moron thought it would be a good idea to try to trip me on a staircase while I was in my ROTC uniform, and he ended up being thrown down a marble staircase, I have not had a physical fight since. At 82, and with more than my share of medical ailments, including being down to just one kidney, I am not about to get into any potentially life threatening physical fights with anyone. I would prefer to defend myself with my handgun if I can't just walk away safely.
 
The last real fight I got into was in 10th grade. About halfway into the fight I got a real good punch to the kid's face. Problem was I hit his cheek bone and broke my little finger knuckle/bone. That really hurt both of us me more. Can't stop the fight so you have to fight with a broken finger. Sure, was glad when he wanted to stop.
I won but lost :) :) No he didn't pay my doctor bill.
 
Remember all the Steven "Seagull" movies back in the 80's? Everything I've read about him portrays him as an arrogant egotistical bully.
Is he really a true martial artist or was it all just hype?
Mix of both. He was trained by his father-in-law in Japan, from whom he inherited a dojo. The style he practices is called Tomekei Aikido, sometimes called Aiki-Jutsu and is the more street realistic style of Aikido. That being said, can he fight? I have been to one of his training seminars. He is technically proficient, though what you saw in the video above was pure garbage. Still, knowing techniques without having experience leaves his fighting ability in question. He certainly ducked out of a fight with JCVD. I also knew a few of his students, who say that he is an obnoxious bully, and was not pleasant to his ex. If you only remember him from his movies and see him live today you would be shocked. That thin movie star is now HUGE.

Vito I always enjoy your post. Didn't know we had so much in common. Turned 80 in November. Seven back surgeries and a stroke. My mobility is pretty good and I workout at a gym. I was/am small and started school at five so I was a year younger than most of the students. My dad worked for a pipeline construction co and I changed schools 20 times by high school. I lost fights and won some. I always got in the first punch. Now I've been taken cane self defense from Master Gary Hernandez for the past two years, shoot one or twice a week, practice with the MantisX system most days. Did a couple of martial arts and some boxing, but those days long past.
 
I have never trained or studied for a martial art. Growing up I got into a lot of fights until I was about 14. There were about 5 boys within a year or two of my age on the street I grew up on. One in particular liked to fight. He & I would fight one day & the next I would be stopping one of the older (bigger) kids from getting him. I got into fights at school because I didn't know how to back down & let things go. Sometimes I won, sometimes I took a beating. It wasn't always fighting just one person.
After being grown (18 or 19) I only ever jumped on one person. There was a lot of alcohol & sleep deprivation & someone that did not understand what stop that & leave me alone meant. Thankfully my sister stopped me.
The only other incident I've had in adulthood involved a co-worker trying to jump on me. I was honestly trying to shake him out of a funk. Picking at him just a little bit.
I passed him & heard something scrape the floor. I looked back to see him head down, arms out, red faced mad running at me. We were working a shutdown at a beverage manufacturer. No one else was around. I knew if we were caught fighting, we would both be fired. I pivoted on my left foot to get out from in front of him, close lined him, took him to the ground & pinned him until he became reasonable. I kept trying to let off & let him get up & he would try to start fighting again. After about the second time I told him that if he didn't quit I'd have to hurt him. I was blessed that he was acting in anger, not thinking about what he was doing & he really didn't know how to fight. It is harder when you're trying to make someone stop what they are doing without doing any actual harm to them.

When I was in high school we took a local transit system city bus from a local school to the high school. The bus was segregated with seniors and juniors in the back half and freshman and sophomores in the front half.
A sophomore classmate was a smoker, he sat about halfway back where the upperclassmen sat and smoked.
At some point smokers thought it was cool to turn up their Bic lighters to max and singe the hair on the back of the persons head sitting in front of them. My smoker classmate was behind me and thought it was a cool idea to do it to me. I never bothered anybody, just minded my own business. I felt the heat. In an instant I turned around and blasted him right square in the face with my fist. Blood everywhere, and the whole back of the bus laughing and cheering. Nobody EVER messed with me on that bus ever again. FAFO.

did all my training in my 20's and early 30's.... I know it in my head but getting it to the arms and legs is questionable.... no... doubtful... not much training in weapons but I'd like to get into canes or bo staff.
I see these tai chi exercise programs on the internet but I'm skeptical of most ads I see...
The only time I really used any fighting martial stuff was, I knocked a guy who was harassing me half way across the camp ground with a tai chi breathing exercise.. it surprised me as much as him!!!
I'd like to get back into something just for the health benefits... until then I'll rely on my "halitosis-do" training.......
 
Have rank in judo and several martial arts including black belt in go ju ryu karate. Lots of gun knife defense practice and some real take aways. Have scars. Knives scare me.

Old, fat, and slow now with an accumulation of aches, pains, and injuries.
