Very nice piece you have there. Those 86's were real workhorse guns.
My dad collected Winchesters heavily from the mid-60s to the late-90s (he actually still does, but his purchases are way down because of the prices). Heck even in the 80's as a kid I remember what he was paying at gun shows....and it would make your jaw drop. Clean 71's could be had for $400 - $500, 92's were about the same, etc. His finest grab was a like new take-down 1895 in .405 back in 1980 (I think less than 100 take-down 405's exist). He paid $550, but I guess at the time that was a lot of money.

Nice. I do like the 1886 platform, but they are a hefty piece to carry in the field. I have two (45-90 and 40-65) and then a 71. I really should get them out and shoot them and take some pics... Nice photo there, Doccash.
Oh eat my socks, a special order '86. Doc we need details here to go a long with your awesome picture. I bought mine a few years ago before they got so expensive but here is a story for you. Back in the early 60's my cousin went to Montana elk hunting and stopped at a gun shoppe out there and found an '86 that externally was and is in excellent condition. It was a small calibre and someone had bored it out to 45-70. It had an original Lyman tang sight on it. Are you sitting down? He gave $125 for it. I love all Winchester lever actions but the '86 is far and away my favorite.

As Far as this rifle is concerned it is a .40-82 deluxe w/ single set trigger and beaches front sight, First year of production. Purchased by me in 1968 for 175.00. 'Tis a grand rifle and has many stable mates to keep it company. Dr.C

$175!!! Tonight there is a fowl stench on the breeze floating from Texas to Kentucky. Doc a few years ago I saw a very similar 86 in 40-65 at the big Louisville gun show and the owner was asking $11,500 for it. My dream '86 is a light weight in 40-65 with 24" octagon to round barrel. I saw it several years ago but it was way to rich for my blood.

Tom: I like your '86 collection. I have a light wt. .45-70 half octogen, a dream to carry, shoots well too. I have several more .40-82's one featured in G. madis' book. Love the '86 but havn't bought one in a long time. My wife bought me a '71 Deluxe, !st year gun for a wedding present, since then I have bought HER four more !!

I wanted a LW in 45-70 until I shot one that a friend had. I'll admit Im not that crazy about recoil and that baby kicked. Glad I went with the 33. I load my 348 with a 200 gr Hawk FN bullet over a healthy dose of H-4831 and it may very well be one of the most lethal deer killers I've ever owned. If I ever go on another elk hunt I'll take it or the 33 along. I have killed a major truck load of deer with my 86's over the last 20 odd years and not one single time have I ever had one malfunction. That says something for the genius of John Moses Browning.

Those old 33's were neat guns. My dad liked the round so much he built one on a Siamese Mauser. The only difference is he set it up to shoot 0.338" bullets.
