Most of y'all know I have a few cats. Especially those who've visited the Gathering.

Over the years,, we've had as few as 2 and as many as 6 at one time. Well, last fall we went down to 3 & we were ok with that.
Fast forward to Jan. and I saw a few cats on my cameras at the range. I had some older cat food given to me,, so I put out a little. It didn't take long to see a sleek little black cat becoming a regular. In short order,, she got to where she would be waiting on me to put out her food. She's feral,, but got used to me somewhat. I can't touch her,, or anything,, but she would come to me, and eat while I sat with her.
Along about April,, I saw she was nursing babies. That's when I knew that she was a she!
Well, she kept going to (2) different places after eating,, so I knew about where the kittens were. She settled on my old house,, on my range.
I put a few cameras in there, and sure enough,, I saw her & a couple of babies as they were beginning to run around. It was kinda hard to tell how many I had at first,, because I eventually learned that she has (3) pairs of almost identical kittens. (1) pair all black,, except I learned one did have a small white spot on it's chest. (1) pair,, a gray peppery look to them. VERY hard to tell them apart. Then the 3rd pair,, gray & white but the markings were very similar. I was able to figure out which one was which.
Of course,, a litter box & extra food & water for them to learn things was in order.
Followed by catching them & putting them in a kennel cage to give me easy access & the ability to handle & pet them. Getting them used to people, so I could find them good homes.
Luckily,, I was able to get a pair sent to one home, together,, to a lady who'd recently finished cancer treatment, and she wanted another cat or two to go with the one she already had. Two down,, 4 to go,,, sorta.

Now,, Miss Penny had had a dream early on about one of the gray/white ones. In it the kitten was named "Gizmo." In the dream there was one of the peppery ones too. But Gizmo was a standout.

Then I found a young couple, shooters,, where the girl was actually wanting a cat. At my June match,, she decided she wanted one,, and her hubby said "no problem!" But as she was trying to pick one,, she decided to take a pair. Off went my black one with the little white spot, and the last peppery one.

That left us with a pair. A solid black little female, and Gizmo. We had given the nickname of "Shadow" to the black one.
Fast forward to now.

I thought I'd found a home for Shadow,, but the lady chose to not take her. And with them getting bigger & all, we decided to bring them home to us. Yesterday was their first vet visit, wellness check, first round of shots & all. They are both just fine. So we moved them home with us.
I've been keeping them in a kennel cage so I figured it would be fine here. I knew that our other 3 would need time to get used to the kittens, and the kittens needed a little time to get used to the new home. The kennel does have bigger square holes along the bottom, that I had attached other wire to cover those "escape holes" to prevent them from exiting the kennel.
Well,,,,,,,,,,, I figured they were now big enough to not need that wire,, as I had to take it off to move the kennel. I didn't put it back on when I brought them here.

Big mistake.

A little after 6 am,, I heard them rattling around the kennel, and even meowing a little. All went quiet,, and I didn't immediately get up to check on them.
Miss Penny got up soon after & discovered the kittens were not in the kennel.
The search was on.
It took a bit,, but we finally found them in hiding in Penny's sewing room. Shadow is a cuddler,, but she's also a bit timid. Gizmo is a lot more active & will also cuddle. But she wants to get out & explore.
After getting them out, cuddling them a good bit,, Penny decided to take them into her "Happy Room" where there are fewer places to hide, and such. We let them roam a bit,, and I went to get the wire to fix the holes to prevent future escapes until we can turn them out with the others. When I returned,, it was once again a chore of herding cats to round up the pair of them, in a very small very tight space,, they had snuck into.

So about 2 hours of my morning was spent searching for, finding & recovering & herding a pair of new kittens to our clan here.

But they are doing just fine,, and when being held,, are quite comfortable & loving. The next few days,, I'm sure will involve a bit more herding as well.

WHEW!

Never been a cat person, yet I was the one who always got stuck with the cat box duty. I cannot tolerate that smell anymore.

If they can go out and poo like a dog, I might put up with one. Great story ☺️

About 3 years ago a little cat showed up who had successfully dodged the local coyotes. She ended up having 6 kittens but a local wanted some cats for his barn. I gave him 5 of the kittens and kept the mother and one of her sons. Both are "fixed" and live in our garage. We weren't cat people either but that has since changed.

I now have one cat. A few years ago Callie just showed up one day, literally banged on the front door, and is still here. She follows me like a puppy. Herding cats IS a challenge. They have the ability to hide in the most inaccessible places. At one time we had five. At any given time four could be found.

Johnnu2,, the momma is still there at the range. In fact,, I just returned from feeding her. She's on the short list to be captured & fixed. But the range is her home.

Cat litter box duty is not too bad. Beats getting up in the wee hours, to go out in the cold or the rain or snow etc to walk the dog.

NEITHER type of pet is perfect.

Just a little while ago,, Penny had Gizmo in her lap playing. I had Shadow in my arms,, where she promptly preened a bit,, flopped over,, stretched WAY out,, laid back & went to sleep. Sideways across my chest. For a little 3.8 lb thing,, she's hot!

The other 3 cats here haven't fully accepted them yet,, so it'll be another night in the kennel. But we do get them out,, interact with them all day, and try & give them the ability to see that this place isn't too bad. They've had a busy few days for sure!

But the best part is knowing I'm doing just a little thing to assure they all have good homes & are well taken care of.
In my business, I have to put down a lot of critters. No sense adding to the list some innocent kittens when good homes can be found.
Besides,, kittens are so cute!!!!!!!!!!

It may feel like a little thing to you (even though I bet it doesn't) but to those little ones it's a big deal indeed.
No hunger, thirst or cold and loving homes to boot.
Ya done good.

"5 cats, the smell must be awful in that house."

Actually, you can ask the folks here who have visited,, and they will tell you our house doesn't stink.
We maintain our litter boxes,, yes,, we have more than one,, and if done so, you do not get that smell that so many who don't maintain the boxes get.
Yes,, daily we clean boxes. We have it down to a simple & effective method. Not hard at all.

BTW; My youngest son has asthma & some allergies. If he pets cats, or stays in a house for a bit with them, he can get a reaction. But he loves our cats, and visits us w/o issues. He just can't stay more than a few hours due to the dander in the air & all. We do keep stuff clean here. We do several things to assure a clean home.

Oh,, and dogs can also create a smell in homes where the owners do not maintain things. I have a good friend who I had to reduce my visits to his house because of his dog smells.

It's all on how well you take care of them!

This morning has been a riot. We took the kittens out in Penny's "happy room" and turned them loose. For well over an hour,, they were all over the place, and into just about everything they could try & get to!
It was fun watching Penny keep up with them!
Gizmo is definitely the wide open one. Shadow is her follower. She likes to know where Gizmo is at, and cries if she loses her.
But Shadow is a going to be a cuddler. She got on my chest yesterday evening,, stretched out sideways,, and just collapsed into a sleeping baby. Very content & safe.

I know this thread may be trivial to some. Or that many could care less about cats in general. But for us here,, we are enjoying the fun of watching them become part of our family. Knowing what their potential life COULD have been,, well, we know we are doing the right thing.

Contender that is such a great story.

And no I can verify your house doesn’t smell at all.

We have two dogs, and one cat. We do have two air filters, but I promise our house doesn’t smell either.

Growing up, we had a shed outback. When I was in college, a feral cat moved in under the shed. She had kittens, so we caught them. I took them to the local pet shelter, run by the city. But I remember the woman working there was just crazy. So I didn’t leave the cats.

My dad was a science professor. He put them in the display case of the hallway at the university. The sign read, “if these cats aren’t adopted by 5pm, they will be used for scientific experiments.”

They were all gone that day. In reality, he taught geology, so the cats were pretty safe. 😀

It took about a year, but finally my dad got Mamma Cat inside. And once she came inside, she never wanted to sleep outdoors again.

I think she was a Norwegian Forest Cat. Really pretty. Black and white.

So Contender, good luck with getting this cat inside from your range. I bet once you do, that cat will be an indoor cat from then on.

Great story!

We have 3 very pampered cats who are family. Walter is the oldest and came here while I was recovering from chemo. That little cat has brought so much joy to me. He is 8 now.
Tabitha is 7 and came to us from someone who got her for their kids and they preferred the dogs.
Charlie is the baby at 5 and is as big as Walter and Tabitha together. All are rescue cats and that is the way we like to get them.

Well, today was fun.
I took the new ones out to Miss Penny's happy room, and just let them have the run of the place. One of my other cats was in there,, and she just basically ignored the youngun's.
But as they do,, they were exploring. And Gizmo knocked over a picture,, and it made a lot of racket. Scared both of them. Into hiding they went.
I let them hide for a while,, then gently got them out & cuddled them. All is fine.
Kids being kids!

I live out of town in a wooded area. A couple years ago a mommy cat came here and had babies. Being a sucker for critters, I started feeding them. I'm not sure how many are here now, maybe 15 to 20. I do know I keep the dried food bowl full all the time and put out around 20 cans of wet food a day. Sometimes they are joined by a possum or coon. My neighbor has a pet hog that runs loose. He comes down every day and I give him a big bowl of hog food. It is kinda getting out of hand.

sharpblade,, I love seeing that you are so caring & allowing the cats & pig to be visitors & such.

However,, it'd be wise to talk to your local shelter places to see about an inexpensive spay & neuter program they have. It'll help keep the numbers down.
And look into getting inexpensive rabies vaccines at the same time. Raccoons are HIGH on the lost of rabies vectors. Just in the last day or so, a local Sheriff's deputy was serving some papers & got bit by a neighbor's dogs at the location. The dogs are in quarantine, the owner of them is facing fines, and the deputy has been treated for the bite, but is awaiting the decision on rabies shots pending the outcome of the quarantined dogs.

The feral at my range is going to get caught & spayed.

But I love seeing the pics of your gang of felines!

Thanks for the advice Tyrone. I also feed the birds and squirrels. Here's a picture of my last haul from Tractor Supply. 80 lbs of sunflower seed, 50 lbs of hog feed, 20 lbs of dried cat food, 120 cans of catnfood and a box of cat treats.

I never cared for cats until I got married. Funny how that happens; we've had at least one cat at a time now for 42 years. :) The one we have now pretty much owns us. Our house is small, and the travel corridors within are sometimes narrow because of furniture placement and such. The cat will not move from those spaces - you figure out how to get around her. Sometimes an issue when hands are full and you can't see your feet!

I understand cat control. We also have one that knows we will not step on him, so he pushes the boundaries. Usually when I am carrying something.
He also learned a trick.
He will sit at our back sliding door staring at me. Turns on his Vulcan mind meld so I get up and open the door.
We have a cat door right next to the sliding door
I am VERY well trained.

Proof. He is waiting for me to get the door. This time I said no.

Ah yes,, cats do learn to trust us not to step on them. Then occasionally they don't realize that we can't see them & they do get stepped on.

Drinking from a sink is a common occurrence for cats. We have (2) sinks in the master bath,, and with 3 adult cats,, it can be comical to watch them take turns drinking. Penny thought she'd be "smart" and bought one of those expensive "cat drinking fountains." Well, they use it,, but the bathroom sink is still preferred.

sharpblade,, I applaud you for being kind & considerate to so many critters. But I will caution you about feeding the wildlife so much. Between rabies,, and other issues,, you can find yourself in a bad position with critters getting into your home.
I know,,, I have a business where I deal with that kind of problem all the time.
Bird feeders too close to a home,, is a BIG, and I mean a BIG reason I make a living. Birds are messy. They throw seeds out of the feeder to the ground. Plus squirrels find the seeds in the feeders & on the ground. Then there are all the other critters who come for the seed & such. From the lowly insects that lay eggs in the fertile ground around a feeder,, to the mice, rats, chipmunks, & small ground dwellers. Then the predators that feed on those critters,, like snakes, foxes, coons, coyotes, & on up. Plus bears love bird feeders too.

I always tell my customers that call me about mice, rats in their homes that these vermin are building their nests close to a free & easy food source.
Then there are the squirrels that do the same thing. They move into your homes because they too love free & easy food.

To feed wildlife,, put feeders & such close to woods & well away from the house. That way the critters will use the woods & not your home for shelter & raising their babies. You can still place them in a manner to enjoy watching the bird & such, yet far enough away to avoid infestation by unwanted critters.
