I'm new to the forums and have found them very interesting and informative. As a result, I want to take my "shooters" and make them as original as possible. My question to you all is which boxes would be correct for the guns I own. What I have in my safe are as follows (the X indicating the last numeric digit in the serial number):

Single Six #20-3772X, 6-1/2", unaltered, mfg 1969

Single Six #8511X 5-1/2", unaltered, mfg 1957

Single Six #16034X, 4-5/8", unaltered, mfg 1960

Single Six #46789X, 4-5/8", unaltered w/.22 mag cylinder, original paperwork & receipt from 6/03/1967, mfg 1962 (? about that). This was was just purchased at a show and is unfired.

From what I'm seeing, the boxes should be the black with yellow end caps and a red wreath? But what should the end caps say?

Last question - anyone have any of these boxes available? Especially for the unfired 4-5/8 listed above.

Thanks to all who respond. This is going to be fun...

Welcome to the Forum!
First, a call to Ruger Records will reveal the nomenclature of these guns. Such as RSSM, or SC-6 etc. That way, you can look for the correct end label markings.
The 8511X from 1957 should be a RSS5
The 16034X from 1960 should be a RSS4
The 46789X from 1962 should be a RSSM (possibly)
The 20-3772X from 1969 should be a RSSM (possibly)
Ruger will be able to verify all that.
The boxes will be yellow, two piece, with black end caps, with the Eagle & wreath on the top. The bottom half will be black.
All this is just basic info. THere could be slight difference in the info above.
Next, to make it all a complete package, there are the manuels, the shipping carton, (bookwrap) business reply cards, warranty cards, possible Anderoil cards, NRA cards, and wax paper wrap.
Welcome to collecting!
And, be prepared to pay for quality boxes etc.

the first, early ones would have the "uncatalogged" end label, like the flatgates, so hard to find AND pricey...the other would have the RSS5 and the 'sort' ones have a white sticker ( label) RSS4 over the red end....again, kinda scarce and pricey, good luck...they are out there,BUT be prepared ( said the 'last Boy Sscout') and get your money out if you want to play.......
the Radical One ,may even have 'spares'.........have not seen any for a while ,just in pictures.......

Oops,,, y'all are correct, I did have centerfires on the brain. (It might be due to the 357 box I had on my desk at time.) I do have a bunch of 22 OM boxes,,, I was just in a hurry trying to answer a question while I was thinking of something else. Duhh!!!!!!

Plastic boxes? I didn't think any OM's came in plastic boxes! :D
It was in the late 1980's that the plastic boxes first appeared.

Just a note on the RSS4s. Serial number 16034x should have a box that would look like the RSS5 only it should have RSS4 on it. It is a box that is made for the RSS4s. If your gun has Walnut grips then there should be a small brown stick on label that reads "WALNUT GRIPS".

Serial number 46789X should have a RSS5 box with a white stick on label with the part number RSS4 printed on it. After that first run of RSS4 boxes in 1959 and 1960 I don't think Ruger ever made a special Old Model box for the 4 5/8 in. Single-Six. They just used a 5 1/2 in box and used the white stick on label.

I have spare boxes for 3 of the 4 that you need...

Single Six #20-3772X, 6-1/2" -- RSSM box
Single Six #8511X 5-1/2" -- uncatalogued "RSS" box
Single Six #46789X, 4-5/8 -- RSS4 box, white sticker as Street indicates.

I have to warn you, they are not cheap as these boxes are hard to find and getting harder and harder to find.

If you're seriously interested in them, drop me an email or PM and we can discuss off-line.
